
TEMPE, Ariz. - Several University of Northern Iowa track performers posted regional qualifying marks over the weekend at the Sun Angel Classic on the campus of Arizona State.
The Panther men's 4x400-meter relay team led the charge as Ryan Grenko, Cory Goos, Tyler Mulder and Terrance Reid punched a ticket to the upcoming NCAA Midwest Regional. That group posted a season-best time of 3 minutes, 8.6 seconds to edge second-place Iowa in the 4x400's premiere heat.
Mulder also qualified for regional competition in the 800, as did Goos in the 400 hurdles and Phil Hanson in the pole vault. Among that trio, Hanson had the best finish in his event, placing third with a vault of 16 feet, 6 3/4 inches.
On the women's side of the docket, three UNI Panthers produced season-best times. Michaela Brungardt topped her previous best clocking in the 400 (57.76 seconds), Holli Hosch improved in the 800 (2:15.02), and Carly Olsen posted a time of 4:37.04 in the 1,500.
A select group of UNI tracksters competed in the Jim Duncan Invitational in Des Moines over the weekend, as well. Justin Romero provided the UNI men's main highlight there, finishing third in the discus with a season-best heave of 156 feet, 6 inches. Lindsay Cannaday led the ladies, finishing fifth in the 100-meter dash.
The Panthers host the Mark Messersmith Invitational Saturday at 11 a.m.
