WATERLOO - Waterloo West's offense arrived both late and early Monday as senior Kelli Joens homered in both ends of a 7-5, 4-0 softball sweep of Linn-Mar.

A solo home run by Joens touched off a three-run rally in the sixth inning of the opener, and her three-run bomb in the first inning of game two backed up a three-hit pitching performance by Kayla Bessman.

West scored all four of its runs in the nightcap with two outs in the first on an RBI double by Tarrin Ott, a single by Cassie Knutson and Joens' fifth homer of the season.

"I was pleased with us coming out and jumping on top of them early, but a lot of teams aren't going to allow that," said West coach Kelly Nelson, "so we need to keep scoring in multiple innings and stick to our offensive game plan."

Pitcher Jadyn Spencer swatted a bases-loaded double in the third inning of game one, keeping the Wahawks in the game until Joens' homer sparked their sixth-inning comeback from a 5-4 deficit.

"We've been coming from behind," Nelson said. "Out of our last six games, in four of them we came from behind by more than one run. We're starting to build confidence now that we can come back and score more than one run."

The Wahawks improved to 13-11 overall and 9-7 in Mississippi Valley conference play.

In game two, City High broke a 3-3 tie when a passed ball allowed the go-ahead run to score in the seventh.

"It was disappointing because we had them down first game and we had plenty of opportunities in second," said Tiger coach Tammy Utley. "We just couldn't get a hit when we needed it."
