WATERLOO - With treacherous road conditions facing the wrestling faithful leaving East High School Saturday night, a call could have gone out to the West High grapplers to clear the street.

After all, the Wahawks quickly swept dual meets from Waterloo Columbus and the host Trojans Saturday afternoon.

The day began with West dominating East, 51-24. The Wahawks followed with a convincing, 49-18, victory over the Sailors.

"Our guys wrestled real well today," Wahawks coach Colby Yoder said. "We had quite a few matches go down to the final minute of the third today, and our guys came through. It comes down to conditioning, and I believe our guys are a very sound group right now."

Taylor Steimel led the early surge against Columbus, breaking a 9-6 dual into a runaway. The 135-pound junior pinned his opponent with 10 seconds remaining to light a fire under his teammates.

"Coach always tells us to wrestle smart and be aggressive," Steimel said. "When there was little time left, I just gave a little extra more and pinned him.

"We came here ready to wrestle, and we showed everyone that we were ready. I think we made our coach happy."

Yoder was all smiles afterward as his team reached the 500 mark (5-5) on the season.

The Trojans (3-6) picked up a 42-36 win over Columbus in the final dual as senior Onazi Agbese delivered a pin with four seconds left, giving the home team a 36-30 lead.

"I just wanted to get it done quickly just like coach has taught us," Agbese said. "Our coaches have taught us great techniques, and I used a little of my football skills to get my guy by being fast and keeping low."

"Onazi's win really sealed the deal for us," Trojans coach Willie Gadson said. "We are struggling early, but through time our kids will be alright."

It was a young group in the circle for the Sailors, who have just one senior on the squad.

"It's tough to win duals when you give up 30 points via forfeits," Sailors coach Paul Rea said. "We came out a little flat against West, but the guys picked it up later against East.

"We have a lot of young wrestlers, but you will see a better and different team after Christmas."
