Wagenhofer, Wahawks rout Trojans, 10-0

WATERLOO - Leading scorer Maria Wagenhofer tallied four goals to lead the Waterloo West girls' soccer team past Waterloo East 10-0 Tuesday in the first round of the Class 2A regionals.

West's Rachel Gruetzmacher added three goals. Heidi Anderson found the net twice and Liz Frank finished with one goal and two assists.

"The girls are starting to figure out their roles," West coach Sue Rink said. "They are really starting to understand the game. Now we've just got to execute it against the No. 1 team in the state."

West will meet top-rated Cedar Rapids Kennedy at 6 p.m. today in Cedar Rapids.

CEDAR FALLS 6, MASON CITY 0 - At Waterloo, Courtney Dreyer and Lindsey Morris led Cedar Falls with two goals each. Haley Patterson added one goal and Mason City had an own goal on a corner kick by Dreyer.

Defensively, goalkeepers Michelle Radinbaugh and Rachel Zhorne combined for the shutout.

The Tigers will return to action at 6 p.m. today against sixth-ranked Cedar Rapids Washington at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

COLUMBUS 1, GLADBROOK-REINBECK 0 - At Waterloo, Colleen Sullivan scored the Sailors' only goal with 12:14 remaining as Gladbrook-Reinbeck was eliminated in the second round of the regional tournament.

Playing for the first time in more than two weeks, Columbus had to shake off some early rust.

After failing to convert early opportunities, Columbus finally broke through.

Off a corner kick, Sullivan was surrounded by a swarm of players in front of the Rebels' goal, but got a toe on the ball for the game-winner.

"From the beginning, we started kind of weak," Columbus coach Jose Infante said. "We missed a lot of opportunities and I think it had to do with a lack of playing time. … It was a little frustrating that everyone was not playing the way they normally do."

Columbus plays at Denver at 6 p.m. Friday in a regional semifinal.

DENVER 2, DECORAH 2 (4-3 PK) - At Denver, the host Cyclones prevailed with a 4-3 penalty kick shootout win over Decorah. Trailing 2-0 in the second half of regulation, Denver rallied with a goals from seniors Alicia Koeff and Kirsten Stevens that took place within a minute of each other.

In the shootout, Denver's sixth shooter, Katie Heine, scored the game-winning goal. Stevens, Natalie Figanbaum and Micheala Ryherd also converted penalty kick opportunities.

UNION 10, INDEPENDENCE 1 - At Independence, Union freshman standout Darian Powell tallied seven goals, including three within a 90-second span.

Goalkeeper Whitney Blunt had nine saves for the Knights, who play Center-Point Urbana next.
