WATERLOO - Head coach Stan Wienke had plenty of reasons to celebrate his first victory at Waterloo West.
The Wahawk defense took turns soiling the jersey of Dubuque Senior quarterback Calvin Hawthorn.
West sophomore quarterbackJud Wienke lived up to the hype, completing 20-of-25 passes for 189 yards in his first varsity start.
Veteran running back Collin Styron added balance as he rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries.
It was 15 penalties for 117 yards and a rusty fourth quarter performance, however, that left Stan Wienke concerned after his team's 36-15 win over Senior on Friday night at Memorial Stadium.
"In general, we played the football plays in the game pretty well, but our mental aspect was so weak," the West coach said. "We'll just be 1-8 playing like this.
"Our emphasis was been focus, and we didn't do that tonight."
The focus was there for West early on as its defense held Hawthorn to 2-of-10 passing with one interception and two sacks in the opening half.
"Coach has been saying that if we put pressure on the other teams, a lot of them can't keep up with us because we're a lot faster and a lot more agile," said senior defensive back Jerrold Manago, who reached Hawthorne on multiple occasions.
Offensively, West didn't take long to get its aerial attack in sync. After a dropped pass and an overthrow of receiver Max Shower to open the game, Wienke completed his next nine passes and finished the opening half 10-of-13 for 102 yards.
Shower was his top target, hauling in four catches for 60 yards in the opening half, including a 17-yard TD reception less than two minutes into the first quarter.
"It was just a good play call," Shower said concerning West's first TD of the season. "The safety was playing over the top a little. (Jud) just threw a perfect ball, and I had to make the catch."
West tacked on two more first-half touchdowns and led 21-0 at intermission. The Wahawks added eight third-quarter points before Senior took advantage of an errant long snap and a lengthy passing play from Hawthorne to Dustin Fannon to score 15 unanswered fourth-quarter points.
For West, there's plenty left to be learned before next week's road test at Iowa City West.
"It wasn't great, you could always do better, but for the first time, it was alright," Jud Wienke said of his varsity debut. "I wanted to start off with a win and that's what we did."
