John Sexton

Denver sophomore

Golf

This Cyclone came out of the gate firing darts from the get-go. To date, he possesses a 39.5 nine-hole stroke average and has fired bull's-eyes on no less than three occasions as a meet medalist. Coach Kevin Shedenhelm said Sexton's family ties are one reason he usually tops the leaderboard. "The Sexton family is very much a golf family," he said, noting that John's father, Matt, was once an Ames High standout. Of John, the coach also noted, "his best asset is around the green." Sexton also plays basketball and owns a 3.66 GPA.

Evan Neubauer

Decorah junior

Track and field

This standout is always ready to go the distance for the Vikings. Neubauer's 3,200-meter time of 10 minutes, 3.86 seconds leads Decorah's district. "He's a very dedicated young man in terms of the mileage he puts in during the offseason," coach Joel Rollinger noted of Neubauer, who will end his prep career as a four-year letterwinner in both track and cross country. "He puts in the time that's needed. He understands what he needs to do to be prepared for the season." Neubauer is also a National Honor Society student.

Michelle Schupbach

Columbus senior

Soccer

Despite working double duty this time of year, Schupbach always brings an endless amount of energy. She spends many early afternoons toiling in tennis, for instance, before coming to soccer practices. But she always has plenty of gas left in the tank - her 10 goals this season serve as ample evidence. "After tennis, she's ready to play and ready to go," said soccer coach Jose Infante. "She's been a great player the last few years - she always gives 110 percent." Schupbach has orchestrated an offense that propelled Columbus to a No. 15 ranking as of last week. Schupbach, who owns a 4.06 GPA, is also one of the state's top tennis players.

Kris DuBois

Dunkerton senior

Track and field

This senior possesses nearly unparalleled versatility - and it's one reason she'll continue her running career at the University of South Dakota next season. The Raider is a three-time state qualifier in the shuttle hurdle relay and a two-time state qualifier in the 400 hurdles, in which she placed second as a sophomore. Now, she's got her sights set on state hardware later this month. "She can run anything from a hurdle event to a 1,500 for us - it's a great luxury. It's been a great asset for us," explained coach Virgil Hovden. "I just wish she could run in more than four events!" DuBois also holds her own in the classroom, where she carries a 3.9 GPA.

Abby Coselman

West sophomore

Track and field

This Wahawk has been a star from the first day she set foot on the track. Exhibit A: Her state-qualifying performance last year in the 400. Exhibit B: This entire season. First, Coselman took home a title at the Mississippi Valley Conference indoor meet in the 400. She also took home top billing in that event at the annual Metro Meet. "She is a key part of our track program," said coach Ralph Longus, "as she can compete at a high level in a variety of distances." Coselman, a all-around athlete for West, also participates in volleyball and basketball.

Katie Garrett

Columbus sophomore

Tennis

Garrett recently reeled off her second consecutive WaMaC conference singles and doubles titles, and she appears poised to take even more before the season is finished. "She's figuring out how the game of singles is played - the strategy and the science," noted coach Dave Will. "She's becoming a very intelligent player." So far this spring, Garrett is undefeated in doubles with teammate Jessica Klieman and has lost just one dual-meet singles match. Garrett, who played volleyball prior to last year's injury issues, is also an honor student.

Roxanne Baethke

Riceville

senior

Track and field

Baethke has been a study in perpetual motion throughout her decorated prep career. The three-time state qualifier hopes that helps her to a state title later this month. Baethke, a three-sport star who also participates in National Honor Society and chorus, has been part of three record-setting relay teams. "She's involved in everything, pretty much," noted coach Bryce Conway. "She's battled injury the last two years and was still able to perform well." Baethke plans to attend Wartburg next year and may play volleyball.

Jeff Dunnwald

Hudson

senior

Track and field

Although he's been a member of the Pirates' team for just two years, Dunnwald's experience is priceless for the young club. Hudson's lone senior is one heck of a sprinter, too. "He's our only senior, and everybody looks up to him," explained coach Mike Patton. "He has developed a great rapport. He has really fallen in love with track and field, and he's a great student." Dunnwald, who also played basketball, was a member of Hudson's state-qualifying shuttle hurdle relay team in 2007.
