Cathy Reiter

Union Community, Senior, Soccer

The Knights' senior recently surpassed a pair of career milestones. She scored her 100th goal Thursday against NU High and also has 252 career points. This season, Reiter has a team-high 28 assists to go with her 33 goals. The attacker receives plenty of support from teammates, with Class 1A's No. 4-rated Union off to a 15-0 start. "They play a lot of different sports together and they communicate really well without saying much," Union coach Lizzie Zondo said. "(Reiter's) just a leader by example - never telling others what to do, but just going out there, doing her thing and showing them how to do it that way." Reiter is a second-team all-stater in basketball and plans to play at Kirkwood.

Scott Benson

Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Senior, Baseball

Quality outings have become the norm during Benson's prep career. The Gladbrook-Reinbeck standout opened his senior season Tuesday by throwing a no-hitter against South Hamilton. He finished with 15 strikeouts and one walk. "Scott's effective because he can throw first-pitch strikes and gets ahead in the count," coach Caleb Hamer said. "He can dominate once he gets ahead in the count." Benson has a 25-3 career pitching record, and he went 12-0 last season. The all-state utility player serves as a shortstop when he's not pitching. He was named the North Iowa Cedar League MVP last season. The senior intends to continue his baseball career at Wartburg College.

Anne Nora

Columbus, Freshman, Tennis

The Sailors' freshman defeated teammate Mikal Ratchford to capture a regional singles championship last week. She is undefeated in singles this season and won a WaMaC singles championship without dropping a single game. Nora also won a WaMaC doubles championship. "For a freshman, she possesses a great amount of maturity on the tennis court," coach Dave Will noted. "She has the potential to become one of the best players ever to come out of Waterloo." Nora is an honor roll student who's also active in volleyball, basketball, student government and chorus. She's the sister of state doubles champions Jim and Joe Nora.

Ryan Bixby

Aplington-Parkersburg, Junior, Baseball

The Falcons' pitcher has started the season locked in as a hitter. Bixby went 3-for-3 with two RBIs in Aplington-Parkersburg's win over Hampton-Dumont Monday. He also recorded nine strikeouts in three innings of relief. "His hitting has come a long way since last year," coach Travis Walker noted. "I think (Bixby's) going to have a great year. He hit the ball right on the money three times (Monday) night. … He's got three different pitches that he can throw for a strike, which makes him effective. He throws relatively hard. He's kind of a lanky kid, so he's got an awkward delivery and that brings another element to the table." Bixby also plays football and tennis.

Andrew Peter

Decorah, Junior, Golf

The Vikings' junior has medaled in nearly every meet his season. That trend continued Friday when Peter won his district meet with an 18-hole score of 73. The victory followed medalist performances at conference and sectionals. Peter's district performance helped Decorah qualify for state as a team. He leads a youthful group of Vikings that includes three freshmen. "Andrew's been a great mentor for younger kids," coach Rich Gaard said. "His work ethic rubbed off on them. … He's the type of player that doesn't blow up. He has great consistency." Peter tied for 18th at state last year and qualified with his team as a freshman." He also plays football and is active in music.

Matt McGrew

Don Bosco, Junior, Track and field

Coach Randy Stewart believes McGrew has become a sparkplug for Don Bosco track over the past two years. After displaying considerable physical promise last season, McGrew worked to develop greater technical skills this year. That devotion resulted in his running the fastest 100-meter time in the district at 11.16. McGrew also qualified for the state meet by winning the 200-meter dash and finishing second in the 100 at districts. "Matt has greatly improved in coming out of the blocks," Stewart noted. "He new realizes that you can run a great deal faster if you relax." McGrew is a member of the Dons' football team and also is a Taekwondo black belt.
