CALMAR - Give Jordan Andera an inch and he'll take a mile. And he'll be perfectly happy to drag a defender for 5,280 feet, too.
"He'll do anything he can to get the extra yard," South Winneshiek's Logan Einck said of his quarterback. "He'll take five or six more hits just to get five more yards.
"He gives the team a lot of emotion."
Andera, a senior, also provides the tenth-ranked, Class 1A Warriors with perhaps the most versatile player in Northeast Iowa.
The preseason all-state signal-caller rushed for 1,290 yards, passed for 1,536 yards and scored 30 touchdowns a year ago. Yet, he feels he can do much more. His coach concurs.
"He broke the school single-season rushing record and the single-season passing record in the same year. Those stats, at South Winn, are unheard of," noted coach Jason Ohrt, whose Warriors advanced to the postseason in 2008 before bowing out to eventual Class 1A champ Emmetsburg.
To hear his head coach tell it, Andera runs the spread offense like a poor-man's Pat White, the former West Virginia star.
"Last year he was that prototypical, dual-threat kid. And we've added a few wrinkles this year," Ohrt added. "The thing about Jordan is he does so much. He shuts everybody down at corner, and a lot of (colleges) are looking at him for that."
Said Einck: "I've seen him do kickoffs - he can probably hit it past a Division I college kicker. He kicked a 50-yard field goal in practice one day."
Andera, it seems, is the Swiss Army Knife of Iowa prep football. This year, he could see playing time at as many as six positions: QB, running back, receiver, cornerback, linebacker and as a kickoff specialist.
He rushed for 100 yards and three touchdowns and passed for 96 yards and two scores in Friday's 52-6 season-opening win over Riceville. Andera also went 2-for-2 on extra points and three of his eight kickoffs went for touchbacks.
"I'm looking to have a lot of fun this year," said Andera, a Fort Atkinson resident. "This season I've got nothing to lose. That's pretty much my mentality."
The spread offense is still a bit of a novelty among Northeast Iowa's high school teams. But, South Winn's success with the up-tempo, pass-happy system could spur some copy-cat attacks. Of course, not many 18-year-old quarterbacks can match Andera's skill set.
"It's a fun offense. It utilizes my abilities," explained Andera, who occasionally operates out of an empty backfield. "Out of shotgun, I can see the whole field and do my thing."
The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder recently ran a 4.58-second 40-yard dash and has received recruiting overtures from numerous Division II schools and Iowa State.
But he plans to lead his Warriors on a prolonged postseason run before making college plans.
"He hates to fail," said Ohrt. "The kid is fiery. Everybody wants to succeed for him. The guys are willing to go to battle for him."
And Andera plans to let it all hang out this season, like only a rare field general can.
"'The Express.' That's a good (movie)," Andera noted. "I like (Ernie Davis') quote at the end, where he said, 'Football is just a game. What matters is what you play for.' That's so true with me. I'm a competitor, I love to win and, even more than 'win,' I like to play."
Make no mistake, pigskin is a passion for Andera.
"There's no experience like it in life - playing with your teammates as one."
AUDIBLES, WITH SOUTH WINN'S JORDAN ANDERA …
YOUR TEAM HEARD TORNADO SIRENS DURING PRACTICE RECENTLY. SCARED?
"It wasn't too scary. … We ran up to the school and there was us, cross country and volleyball in one hallway. We were laughing, because, if we had a tornado come, we had all our pads and helmets on; the volleyball girls would've been out of luck."
IS THERE ONE GAME YOU'RE REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS SEASON?
"We play one game in the UNI-Dome, versus Denver. I think it's the seventh week. UNI … that's a school after this year I hope to hear from."
NAME THE FUNNIEST THING YOU'VE EVER SEEN ON A FOOTBALL FIELD.
"Last year we were playing Turkey Valley and Brad Winter, a friend of mine for them, broke loose and I horse-collar (tackled) him and he flew back like five yards. We've been joking about that ever since."
