GRUNDY CENTER - Scott Benson led Gladbrook-Reinbeck into the postseason with his third no-hitter of the year as the Rebels thumped Dike-New Hartford, 9-0, in Class 2A district play Saturday.
Benson (9-1) struck out 14 batters and issued one base on balls, running his season totals to 125 Ks against just 10 walks. He wrapped up the no-hitter on just 81 pitches.
"He had hellaciously nasty curveball tonight," said G-R coach Caleb Hamer. "He gets ahead in the count, and he doesn't go deep."
Benson, a senior right-hander, also went 3-for-5 at the plate, part of a 17-hit Rebel attack. Andrew Thede went 3-for-4, while Brett Bengen went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs batted in.
The Rebels (18-6) return to Grundy Center Tuesday for a regional quarterfinal clash with the host Spartans.
