CEDAR RAPIDS - With their backs against the wall, Aplington-Parkersburg and Chelsea Poppens refused to let the Falcons lose.

The senior turned in a stellar performance, recording 30 kills, 14 blocks and 24 digs as Aplington-Parkersburg rallied from a 2-0 deficit to stun Kuemper Catholic, 21-25, 17-25, 25-21, 25-20, 15-10 in a Class 2A first round contest.

Poppens' performance overshadowed a similar outstanding effort from Kuemper Catholic's Amy Dentlinger, who recorded 27 kills and 15 digs while teammate Sydney Stickrod added 19 kills.

As a team, the Falcons didn't give many points away at the service line, making 92 of 94 serves with six aces, with Poppens leading the way with three.

2A

CEDAR RAPIDS -Hannah Willms had 11 kills, five blocks and 12 digs to lead second-ranked Dike-New Hartford to a 25-13, 25-11, 25-20 victory over Waterloo Columbus in Class 2A action at the State Volleyball Tournament Thursday night.

The Wolverines, last year's runner-up in Class 2A, were impressive, hitting 272 as a team while collecting 14 blocks. In addition to Willms' performance, Heather Rekers added nine kills while Heather Rekers collected nine. Emily Merfeld had a team-high 15 digs.
Waterloo Columbus was led by Rachel Schaefer's 12 kills while Michelle Schupbach added eight digs.
Dike-New Hartford will face unbeaten IKM-Manning tomorrow in the Class 2A semifinals at 6 p.m.

2A results

IKM-Manning beat Pella Christian, 25-16, 25-20, 25-17

Dike-New Hartford beat Waterloo Columbus, 25-13, 25-11, 25-20.

Western Christian beat Unity Christian, 25-8, 25-23, 25-11

Aplington-Parkersburg beat Kuemper Catholic, 21-25, 17-25, 25-21, 25-20, 15-10

CEDAR RAPIDS - Tripoli spoiled the state tournament debut of Kingsley-Pierson as freshman Megan Gilbert knocked down nine kills to lead the Panthers to a 25-17, 25-13, 25-16 victory.

Gilbert recorded nine kills with seven blocks to pace Tripoli. Micah Wedemeier added seven kills. Briana Schaeuble had 13 kills

Tripoli improves to 27-11 and will face Springville in the 1A semifinals at 7:15 p.m. Friday.
