Riceville beats North Iowa in 1A first round

RICEVILLE -- Riceville's softball squad tallied three runs in the sixth inning and four runs in the seventh to stroll past North Iowa, 13-7, in Wednesday's Class 1A postseason opener.

The Wildcats (10-20) received three RBIs from Jessica Schneider and two apiece from Maria Green, Madi Linkenmeyer and Amanda Eggerichs.

GMG 9, NU HIGH 0 -- At Traer, the Green Mountain-Garwin Wolverines of the Iowa Star conference cruised past the North Iowa Cedar League Panthers.

DON BOSCO 5, NORTH TAMA 0 -- At Traer, No. 10 Don Bosco used more stellar pitching to move past host North Tama.

Don Bosco (26-8), which surged into the rankings earlier this week, now takes on GMG Monday in round two of district play. First pitch of that 1A, Region 7 second-round dustup is set for 7 p.m. in Traer.

ALBURNETT 4, DUNKERTON 1 (8 inn.) -- At Alburnett, the Dunkerton Raiders fought tradition-rich Alburnett tooth-and-nail, taking the Pirates to extra innings. Alburnett then dented the scoreboard three times.

Now, Alburnett will vie with Northeast Iowa power Janesville, ranked sixth in the state. Janesville hosts Alburnett in round two, July 7 at 7 p.m.

KEE HIGH 8, VALLEY OF ELGIN 6 -- At Clermont, Kee High edged the Tigers in a 1A, Region 6 opener.

POSTVILLE 10, WEST CENTRAL 0 -- At Postville, the host Pirates surged to a decisive triumph.

Postville plays Kee High next, on July 7 at Postville. First pitch of that second-round clash is set for 7:30 p.m.

CENTRAL CITY 7, WAPSIE VALLEY 5 -- At Fairbank, the host Warriors were upended by a feisty Central City squad.

EAST BUCHANAN 6, TRIPOLI 1 -- At Winthrop, the host Buccaneers strolled past Tripoli. East Buchanan now hosts Central City in its second round contest, July 7 at 7 p.m.
