MASON CITY - Defending Class 1A state champion Jon Tink of Walnut Ridge won a district golf meet Friday at the Highland Park Golf Course.
Tink defeated Mason City Newman's Jake Taylor in a one-hole playoff to earn medalist honors.
Both players shot a one-over 73 in regulation play.
NU High will also be making the trip to the Spring Valley Golf Course in Livermore for the 1A state championships after finishing third. The Panthers will join Newman and East Buchanan of Winthrop as the team qualifers.
It is the third time in the past four years and seventh occasion in the last 11 years NU High has qualified for state.
"I'm very proud of the kids," NU coach Lee Weber said. "They worked very hard to get this far."
The Panthers were led by Ben Peterson's 76. Jalen Bergman and Thomas Creeden finished with a 77 and 79, respectively.
Also in district play Friday, Independence's Jake Thomas shot a 73 to capture the district title at Gardner Golf Course in Marion and advance to next week's state tournament. Decorah's Andrew Peter also moved on by finishing second with a 75.
