
WATERLOO - Waterloo East came up one base hit short of a sweep Thursday as the Trojans split a Mississippi Valley Conference softball doubleheader against Iowa City High, winning 10-2 before dropping a 4-3 heartbreaker.
City High took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener, but the Trojans (20-11) broke the game open with a six-run third inning.
East's Amanda Magnusion knocked in one run with a double, while Sarah Schmitz had a pair of hits and three RBIs in the win.
"Our team played hard," said East coach Gene Laughlin. "They expect to win every game, and every team has its ups and downs, but our team always finds ways to win games."
Kylie Rash threw a four-hitter in the victory.
City High used a three-run third in the nightcap to build a lead that stood at 4-1 after six innings, but East nearly pulled off the comeback.
Megan Dunn doubled in two runs, and Alyson Netty's base hit put runners on second and third, but Hawks pitcher Erin Weno got a strikeout to end it.

Wahawks throttle hapless Wash
CEDAR RAPIDS - Waterloo West erupted for 28 hits in an 11-1, 13-0 doubleheader sweep of Cedar Rapids Washington Thursday night in Mississippi Valley Conference action.
Rebekah Doering led the Wahawks (17-11, 13-7) by going a combined 5-for-7 in the doubleheader with four runs scored and five RBIs. West's Tracy Shirey was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs in the opener.
In game two, Kelli Joens went 3-for-3 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and four RBIs. Lindsey Hansen was also 3-for-3 with a single, double and triple.

Union hangs 13-0 loss on Panthers
CEDAR FALLS - Ashley Jungling threw a one-hitter as Union took just five innings to blank the NU High softball team, 13-0, Thursday.
The Knights scored in each inning, putting up 13 runs on just seven hits.
