WATERLOO - Having lost five of their last six baseball games, the Waterloo Columbus Sailors wanted to get out quickly, and the insertion of five soccer players into the lineup didn't hurt their cause as they put the mercy rule on Union High in the fourth inning, 15-0.

Sailor pitcher Nate Ott backed up the offense with a four-ining no-hitter.

Gabe Drewelow took the first Knight pitch of the evening up the middle for a single and the bats never cooled on what was a beautiful, sunny day at the field.

"When you see a pitch you like, coach (Terry Goerdt) does encourage you to take a cut at the first pitch," said Drewelow. "When you like it, hit it."

Two first-inning runs were followed by six runs in the second, and a two-run stand-up triple for leadoff hitter Drewelow, who reached base on all four at-bats for the day.

"I really liked our approach at the plate," said Goerdt. "I thought we were aggressive with the bats.

"We had a lot of really good first swings and we were fortunate a little bit. We hit some balls that were seeing-eye singles. We get that when we're aggressive at the plate, like we were tonight."

Ott didn't allow a hit or a run in the abbreviated game, striking out seven while walking three.

"Nate Ott on the mound, struggled a little bit with his control," Goerdt said. "Overall, he made the pitches when he had to make them and kept their runners off the bases and made it a little easier on our defense."

The hot bat of the day went to Taylor Ingles, who went 2-for-4, driving in four runs. Kyle Henninger went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and closed out the game by hitting a shot that smashed off the left-field fence to drive in the 15th run.

The Sailors (3-5) travel to Vet Stadium in Cedar Rapids to take on Western Dubuque today at 3:30 p.m.
