JOHNSTON - Waterloo Columbus' Lauren Friedman and Michelle Schupbach enjoyed a perfect day Thursday as they began their quest for a third straight Class 1A state doubles tennis title.

Friedman and Schupbach cruised through the first and second rounds without dropping a set, including a convincing 6-3, 6-2 quarterfinal sweep over Andrea Guerra and Maureen Feyen of Dubuque Wahlert.

Up next for the Sailor duo was a semifinal clash with top-seeded Ashtyn Dixon and Tiana Bark of Camanche. Despite their No. 4 seeding, Schupbach and Friedman dominated Dixon and Bark, 6-2, 6-0, in last year's finals.

Columbus' other doubles team, Katie Garrett and Jessica Klieman, went 1-2 on the day, exiting with a three-set consolation quarterfinal loss to Dixon and Bark.

Decorah's doubles team of Logan Thompson and Karissa Shindelar is still alive in the consolation bracket.

In singles play, Decorah's Jenny Dallenbach advanced to the semifinals with straight-set wins over Stacia Vos of Pella Christian and Evan Tonda of Knoxville. She will meet top-seeded Chelsea Moore of Camanche in the semifinals.

After a quarterfinal loss to Sarah Dalton of Wahlert, Columbus' Anne Nora defeated teammate Mikal Ratchford in the consolation quarterfinals.

Dike-New Hartford's Jennah Smith had one of the longest days on the court in the tournament. After a first-round loss to Dalton, she outlasted Harlan's Megan Kaufman in a three-set consolation tiebreaker before falling to Wahlert's Celia Morton, 6-4, 7-6 in the consolation quarterfinals.

In the Class 2A tournament at Iowa City, the singles semifinal matches were No. 1 Krissy Lankelma of Marshalltown vs. Kristin Barnes of Bettendorf, and Cassandra Chalhoub of Cedar Rapids Xavier vs. Susanna Howard of Iowa City High.

The Class 2A doubles semifinalists were Evelyn Qin/Jessica King (Ames), Julia Vodislav/Sarah Massey (Clinton), Stowe Heiderscheit/Brooke Johnson (Bettendorf) and Libby Caris/Ellie Nixon (Des Moines Roosevelt).
