WATERLOO - With a long history of snapping up bids to the state girls' tennis tournament, this year Waterloo Columbus cornered the market.

It was an all-Sailor final in Thursday's Class 1A singles and doubles regional at Byrnes Park, as Columbus grabbed all six available state berths, including singles champion Anne Nora and doubles champions Lauren Friedman and Michelle Schupbach.

With runners-up Mikal Ratchford (singles) and Katie Garrett/Jessica Klieman (doubles) penciled in for the region's remaining state bids, the Sailors have had a representative at the state tournament for 40 consecutive years.

"This is what you always hope for, and they got the job done today," Columbus coach Dave Will said. "We always figure we're good enough to make it to the state tournament, and we've been blessed with a lot of good kids in 40 years."

Seniors Schupbach and Friedman are the defending two-time Class 1A state doubles champions, and Schupbach now has a chance at a fourth straight state title. She also won in 2006 with her sister, Andrea.

"(Friedman) is awesome up at the net," Schupbach said of her partner. "I am more of a baseline person, but she just puts everything away, and I can always trust her."

The pair's only losses this season have come to the teams of Lindsey Cayton/Hannah Hart of Marion and Andrea Guerra/Maureen Feyen of Dubuque Wahlert, both of which were also at Byrnes Thursday in the Region 6 tournament.

"We know we're going to see them at state, and we'd better bring our game," Friedman said.

While seniors Schupbach and Friedman claimed a 6-2, 6-2 sweep over juniors Garrett and Klieman for the doubles crown, the singles title was contested between a pair of younger players.

Nora, a freshman, finished a long day with a 6-1, 6-3 win over sophomore Ratchford, who also serves as her doubles partner.

"I thought I would play varsity this year, but I didn't think I would win the district or anything like that," Nora said.

Ratchford earned her spot at state with a semfinal win over top-seeded Alicia Leighton of Independence, which came down to a grueling 7-5 second set.

"I had to just calm myself down, drink a lot of water and strategize," Ratchford said.

Two regionals took place at Byrnes Thursday, and Dubuque Wahlert claimed three of the four state bids in Region 6. Sarah Dalton swept Golden Eagle teammate Celia Morton in the singles final, while Marion's Cayton and Hart edged Wahlert's Guerra and Feyen in doubles.

The battles between teammates extended to a third-place match in Region 6, in which Iowa Falls-Alden's Claire Evans took a straight-set victory over her cousin, Kelsey Evans.

The third-place medal in Region 4 went to Independence's Leighton, who was spent after the day-long tournament.

"I'm extremely whipped, but I'm happy and surprised with how I played," Leighton said.

State singles and doubles will take place at Johnston on June 4-5.
