Tigers get going after a frustrating start

WATERLOO - All the commotion on the basepaths through two innings stirred nothing on the scoreboard.

Then, Cedar Falls blew its share of the zeroes right out of the ballpark here Friday.

The Tigers broke the game open in the third inning and rolled to a 9-1 victory over Waterloo East, their second win over the Trojans in as many days.

It all felt as good as a breath of fresh air on a humid summer's day to head coach Jack Sole, who admitted to feeling a little early anxiety. Cedar Falls left the bases loaded in the first inning and stranded a pair of baserunners in the second.

"I was getting frustrated," said Sole after the Tigers improved to 6-16 overall and 4-11 in Missisippi Valley Conference play. "I think we left five or six guys on in the first two innings, and we're not good enough to do that.

"We did a nice job when it counted, but it's just one of those things where you can't sit around and wait."

That's exactly what East head coach Cory Goldsmith had to do. The Trojans (1-20, 0-13) filled the bases with two out in the bottom of the second, but Cedar Falls left-hander Jared Alberts got a strikeout to douse the threat.

"That hurts bad," said Goldsmith. in the wake of East's 18th straight defeat. "We really had a chance to seize the momentum and we missed out on a big opportunity."

Indeed. With the scoreboard still showing a 0-0 stalemate, Cedar Falls took charge in the top half of the third.

Jeff Conrad's one-out single started the rally. He stole second and then scored on Matt Hart's base hit. Following Matt Schindel's infield hit, sophomore catcher Joe Schwickerath smacked a ground ball single down the right-field line to bring home Hart.

"We struggled to put runs on the board right away," said Schwickerath, who enjoyed his second multiple-hit game against East. "Then everybody came around and starting hitting and picking up the pitches. We started making contact and putting the ball in play."

Conrad hammered a two-run homer in the fifth on the way to four RBIs.

The Trojans spoiled the shutout in the home half of the seventh on Michael Thompson's leadoff home run.
