Tayloe captures Balk title

MASON CITY -- Cedar Falls standout Jacob Tayloe claimed victory in the Mason City Gene Balk Invitational Thursday evening as the Tigers came an eyelash away from knocking off No. 4-ranked Marshalltown for the boys team title.

Tayloe earned his second win of the season in 16 minutes, 51 seconds, while Cedar Falls finished second with in 39 points. Marshalltown won the meet with 36. Waverly-Shell Rock was third in the team standings with a score of 85.

In the girls race, host Mason city won the team title with a score of 59. Cedar Falls finished nine points back of Marshalltown in third with 79. Waterloo West was seventh with 192 and Waverly-Shell Rock finished ninth with 240 points.

Paige Hersom of Cedar Falls was the top area finisher with a 10th place time of 16:41. Lydia Martin Marshalltown won the meet in 15:52.

WEST BOYS TAKE THIRD " A short-handed Waterloo West boys cross country team finished third Thursday with a score of 94 in the Tony Proctor Invitational.

Burlington, led by overall winner Marshall Moyer's first-place time of 16:22, won the meet with a score of 21. Zach Kienol led West, who was missing several athletes, with an eighth-place time of 17:14.85.
