Waterloo East (0-1)

at Cedar Falls (0-1)

Time: 7:45 p.m. Friday

Location: UNI-Dome, Cedar Falls

Last meeting: The Tigers made it 12 straight victories over the Trojans with a 41-0 decision on Sept. 5, 2008.

What to watch: While not pleased with the outcome, the Tiger coaching staff did make some personnel discoveries in the loss to Wash. Meanwhile, quarterback/linebacker Jake Farley is nursing a shoulder injury and is questionable.

East needs to be more aware of reading keys and playing assignment-sound football, said head coach Antonio Mays, a new father. His daughter, Kyndall, was born Tuesday.

East coach Antonio Mays: "We're an athletic team, but if your eyes are in the wrong place, you can't use your athleticism if you're looking in the backfield."

Cedar Falls co-coach Pat Mitchell: "The first game helped us greatly. We got beat, but we found a lot of positive things that happened."

Cedar Falls co-coach Brad Remmert: "Looking at East offensively, they like to throw the football. If we don't break out and make the tackles, they have kids who can turn a short gain into a touchdown."

I.C. West (0-1) at

No. 10 Wat. West (1-0)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Location: Memorial Stadium

Last meeting: The Wahawks outscored Iowa City West 43-30 last season for a 2-0 start to the season.

Last time out: Waterloo West beat Dubuque Senior, 34-0. Hempstead topped Iowa City West, 38-21.

What to watch: Both teams feature explosive spread offenses and plenty of speed. Iowa City West returns its featured tailback, Jamal Thompson, a senior who rushed for a team-high 643 yards last season. Tayler Bontrager, a 1,528-yard passer from a year ago, has moved from quarterback to receiver. Waterloo West quarterback Connor McClain is coming off his first varsity start in which he completed 9 of 17 passes for 189 yards. Waterloo West was penalized 117 yards in its opener.

West coach Lonnie Moore: "I think we really have got to make sure we make more improvement this week. I told the team we should make the most improvement from the first to second week."

No. 10 Columbus (1-0)

at Hudson (0-1)

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Location: Hudson

Last meeting: Hudson beat Columbus, 52-0, last year in Waterloo.

Last week: Hudson lost to Denver, 23-22 when the winning points were scored on a punt snap that the sailed out of the end zone for a safety. Columbus beat Independence, 41-13.

What to watch: Columbus gave up more than 300 rushing yards last week to Independence, while Hudson gained only 35 on 28 carries. Both the Sailors, who cracked the Class 2A ratings this week at No. 10, and Pirates hope to be better in those categories this week.

Columbus coach Aundra Meeks: "It felt good to get that first win. It was a target and it was nice to start the season with a 'W.' That said, we got to evaluate the film and we found things we needed to work on and get better at. Tackling was one of the things we wanted to address and have been addressing."
