WAVERLY - The Cedar Valley Vikings were looking Saturday night to avenge an embarrassing 30-0 defeat two weeks ago to the Iowa Lightning in Des Moines.

Revenge was sweet for the Vikings as they knocked off the Lightning in a 14-7 defensive battle at Walston-Hoover Stadium on the Wartburg College campus in North American Football League action.

"We made a lot of mistakes last time out, and we were not going to roll over for them tonight," co-coach Andre Tate said. "We knew we would be in a tough fight, but our guys fought hard and would not let themselves lose."

The Vikings (4-2-0) dominated the first half with 145 yards in offense while holding the Lightning to 68.

Still, the Vikings had nothing to show for their efforts until Chris Parsons squeezed in from 1 yard out with 14 seconds left until halftime.

The Lightning (7-1-0) struck back late in the fourth quarter as Everett Roberts snuck in behind defensive back Patrick Jackson and hauled in a 14-yard TD pass to tie the game.

"I came off the field and told my teammates that I will redeem myself," Jackson said.

Jackson got his chance when punter and West High graduate Alen Beganovic pinned the Lightning at its 2-yard-line.

DeMareo Darrah tried to force a pass through the middle of the defense, but Jackson intercepted the ball, returning it to the 2-yard-line.

"I saw them run that play twice already, and I just was not gonna get beat," Jackson said.

Dominic Lemmons cashed in on Jackson's turnover as he ran around the left side for the winning score with 44 seconds left.

"When I saw that pick I knew we were going to win, and I just wanted to reward our defense with the win by scoring," Lemmons added.
