JOHNSTON - The dream came to an end Saturday for Waterloo Columbus senior Michelle Schupbach.
The Sailor tennis star had her sights set on a fourth doubles championship that would have put her all alone in the Iowa state record books.
Instead, it was the top-ranked team of Ashtyn Dixon and Tiana Bark of Camanche that advanced to the title match, with a 6-4, 6-3 semifinals victory over Schupbach and Lauren Friedman.
It was a bittersweet ending to the duo's tennis run with the Sailors, as they settled for third place after a convincing 6-0, 6-2 pasting of Lindsay Cayton and Hannah Mart of Marion.
Dixon and Bark went on to win the state championship with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 come from behind victory over Rachel and Emily Pierson of Red Oak.
In singles action, Anne Nora represented the Sailors well with a runaway 6-0, 6-2 victory over Laura Green of Davenport Assumption for a seventh place finish.
Decorah had top-six performances in both singles and doubles. The team of Logan Thompson and Karissa Shindelar posted a sixth in 1A doubles. Viking Jenny Dellenbach was fourth in singles
In Class 2A, Krissy Lankelma of Marshalltown captured the singles title with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Cassandra Chalhoub of Cedar Rapids Xavier, and the doubles team of Eveln Qin and Jessica King claimed the state title for Ames with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 win over Libby Caris and Ellie Nixon of Des Moines Roosevelt.
