CEDAR FALLS -- A part of the Aplington-Parkersburg High School athletic program was chewed up and spit out across Northeast Iowa during last month's tornado.
The Falcons' tradition remains intact, and it will go a long way toward helping A-P rebuild during a one-of-a-kind fundraiser Sunday at The Hub in Cedar Falls.
National Football League veterans Casey Wiegmann, Aaron Kampman, Jared DeVries and Brad Meester -- all A-P alums -- will join forces for a few hours Sunday to sign autographs and help auction off a truckload of sports memorabilia during an event they hope will raise as much as $100,000 for Falcon athletics.
Five local businessmen are organizing the fund-raiser, which is scheduled for 4-8 p.m.
In addition to the autograph session, silent and live auctions will feature a wide range of collectibles ranging from jerseys and footballs autographed by some of the NFL's biggest names to an autographed Miley Cyrus guitar.
Keith Sandvold (Craft-Cochran), Darrin Corson (OPU), Dave Kelly (The Hub), Marcus Kjeldsen (The Hub) and Tim Godfrey (Witham Auto) are putting the event together.
"Keith and Darrin kind of talked about it in passing," said Godfrey. "They called me because I used to be a roommate of Casey's in college (at the University of Iowa). Through him, I also got to know Jared DeVries."
When Godfrey called Weigmann, the Denver Broncos offensive lineman jumped at the opportunity to get involved.
"Casey was ecstatic about it," said Godfrey. "He said, 'Do whatever you can to get it organized and we'll try to get everybody there.' It kind of snowballed from there.
"These guys who played football at A-P truly love that program and Ed Thomas (the Falcons' head coach)."
DeVries (Detroit Lions), Meester (Jacksonville Jaguars) and Kampman (Green Bay Packers) jumped on board, as well.
And although auction items are still being collected, the list to date includes a basketball signed by the 2008 Kansas University national championship team, a Brett Favre autographed jersey, a Peyton Manning autographed jersey, an autographed Kampman Pro Bowl jersey and a football signed by 2008 Super Bowl champions Tom Coughlin (head coach) and Eli Manning (quarterback), as well as dozens of other jerseys and items from the A-P graduates' pro teams.
"It should be a pretty good fan memorabilia auction," said Sandvold, whose Craft-Cochran business is donating specially designed "Together We Will" t-shirts that can be purchased for autographing.
Fans can also purchase "AP Falcons Tornado Relief" baseball caps designed by Meester's Jaguars club to help raise money for Falcon athletics. More than 1,100 had already been sold a week ago. A $5 donation will also be collected at the door, and food will be available for purchase.
"The biggest thing is that 100 percent of the proceeds will go to A-P athletics," said Godfrey. "We have First National Bank in charge of taking the money and cutting the check. Maybe we can help them purchase a new scoreboard or whatever they're going to need to get back on their feet."
Sandvold said he and Godfrey have received inquiries from ESPN and the NFL Network about possibly filming some of the event.
"It should be a great event, and a great opportunity for fans in the metro area," said Sandvold.
