CEDAR FALLS - Cedar Falls hosted the Rich Engel Classic at Birdsall Park with the boys' cross country team taking first place with a team score of 52 and the girls' team taking fourth place with a team score of 98.

The Tiger boys finished 57 points ahead of second-place Dubuque Senior. The Rams ran to a total of 109 points.

Jacob Tayloe helped pace the Tigers, finishing seventh individually with a time of 16 minutes, 35 seconds.

"I ran well today," said Taylor, "because I was inspired by how Matt Adrian ran on JV today.

"I've been training hard this summer so I could do better and better each race and it has been paying off."

Cedar Falls coach Troy Becker said, "I was very happy with the results today. I was happy … how they all finished well."

The Tiger girls were 10 points behind first-place Linn-Mar, which finished with 88 points.

Cedar Falls girls' head coach Don Williams said, "We have a great squad. All our runners are doing great, and I know we don't have any elite runners, but we have seven great runners.

"All I ask from our team is that they go out there and try their hardest, and they did that today."

Hannah Savage, a Cedar Falls sophomore, finished the race in eighth place individually.

"I really wanted to win the race, but … I tried my hardest today," said Savage. "I trained really hard for this race this summer."

Among other Northeast Iowa squads at the Engel Classic, Decorah's girls finished third, while the Viking boys placed sixth and Waterloo West's boys finished eighth.

"We had some good performances from our varsity," West coach Matt MacKenzie said. "We're getting better each week and if we want to reach our goals we need to keep improving. It was a nice night and the guys competed hard. … We're still hoping our four through seven runners can pack up and push each other."
