
MOLINE, Ill. - Wisconsin-Whitewater broke loose for seven runs in the sixth and seventh innings to end Wartburg College's baseball season at the NCAA Regional Tournament here Sunday, 8-3.
The Knights took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on Pat Grau's RBI double and a run-scoring single by Kyle Jones, but the Warhawks erupted for three runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh to chase starting pitcher Brad Watson, who was tagged for 13 base hits and eight earned runs.
Nate Rost shut Wisconsin-Whitewater down the rest of the way, but Wartburg couldn't mount a rally against Warhawks starter Doug Hanson, who scattered nine hits in a complete-game effort.
Mike Johnson went 3-for-4 to lead the Knights' offense, while Jones and Isiah Stevens added two hits apiece.
The bottom of the Wisconsin-Whitewater lineup did most of the damage for the Warhawks as the sixth through ninth hitters went a combined 9-for-17 with seven RBIs.
Wartburg ended its season with a 28-20 record. Wisconsin-Whitewater (29-18) added a 10-4 win over Millsaps College later in the day to advance to the regional finals today against top-seeded Carthage College (36-5).
