TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - After tallying 31 runs and 37 hits in its past two outings, the Northern Iowa baseball team's offense stalled Friday night.
Indiana State southpaw Michael Manus struck out 11 and limited UNI to just four hits in 7 1/3 innings en route to a 6-2 Missouri Valley Conference win.
The Panthers, who had won 10 of their last 11, were blanked for seven frames by Manus, who came in with a 0-4 mark and 5.79 ERA.
Senior Brett Featherston provided the lone runs of the game for UNI (14-10, 3-1 MVC) with a two out, two-run single in the eighth inning.
The Panthers might have loss more than the game.
Starting pitcher Nick Kirk, who threw a no-hitter last Friday against Evansville, left in the third inning because of tightness in his left pitching arm - an injury that sidelined him for much of the fall.
Chris Schmidt went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI for Indiana State (8-15, 4-3), while Brady Shoemaker and Nick Ciolli each had two hits.
Four of Indiana State's six runs came courtesy of leadoff walks. UNI pitching yielded eight walks.
The two teams continue the three-game series at noon today. Guido Fonseca (5-0) is the scheduled starter for UNI.
