WATERLOO - Saturday featured postcard weather at the Waterloo Open.

And, as a result, several pro scorecards reflected that fact.

On a tranquil, 79-degree day, Irv Warren Memorial's golf course was ripe for pin-hunting, and Gary Rusnak wasted little time seizing the day.

The Santa Rosa Beach, Fla., resident came into the clubhouse on fire, following a final four holes that included a hole-in-one and three birdies, leading to a tournament-best first-round score of 62.

On hole No. 6, playing roughly 157 yards for tournament play this weekend, Rusnak one-hopped a 7-iron shot straight into the cup. It was his 13th career ace.

"It landed about 4 feet from the pin and hopped right in," said Rusnak, who also holed out an 80-yard approach on the second hole, still looking a little shell-shocked after his round.

As the day grew longer, lots of spectators marveled at the 28 Rusnak fired on Irv Warren's front nine.

"Holing out twice in nine holes?" Rusnak pondered. "That doesn't happen too often."

Rusnak's closest pursuers were Adam Meyer and native Iowan Sean McCarty, who both fired 65s Saturday. Bill Hoefle, Jason Preeo and Chris Cureton sit four shots back, after first-round 66s.

Saturday's cut was established at 2-under 70. The top 60 pros, plus ties, will vie for a title in today's final round. The titleist could take home as much as $35,000.

In round one, the serene weather left Irv Warren receptive for eye-opening scoring, especially early. The Open pros only had a slight breeze to contend with much of the day. The rough, meanwhile, was reasonably low. And the greens were rolling true.

Thus, several pros walked away from the scorer's tent shaking their heads, upset with scores that would typically be considered solid.

Count Waterloo native Brock Mulder among that contingent. The 1999 Waterloo West grad shot a 5-under 67, yet lamented three-putts on Nos. 7 and 8.

"I had it. I just felt like I let it slip away," groaned Mulder, who currently resides in Dallas, Texas.

Glacially slow, 5 1/2-hour rounds flustered a few pros as the day dragged on.

"It was rather slow," noted McCarty, a past U.S. Open participant. "It's tough to get in a rhythm, but there's nothing you can do about it."

The forecast calls for more pleasant weather today. Thus, the professionals' game-plan today is simple: come out firing.

"Just be patient, (and) try not to get in my own way," said first-round leader Rusnak, describing his thought-process.

"Nine holes like (Saturday's) makes me feel pretty good."
