CEDAR FALLS - Jake Farley got the first down.

Unfortunately, the clock had expired.

Cedar Falls fell four yards short of paydirt as Dubuque Hempstead improved to 4-0 with a thrilling 14-10 Mississippi Valley Conference football victory Friday in the UNI-Dome.

On fourth-and-three from the Mustang 10 with less than 10 seconds remaining, Farley rolled left, found nobody open and scrambled for the near sideline.

He was tugged down beyond the first-down marker, but short of the goal line, by a group of Hempstead defenders as the clock hit zeros, causing the Mustang sideline to go into a frenzy.

"The seconds couldn't have gone any slower than it did in the last two minutes," exclaimed Hempstead coach Mark Ehlers. "A gutsy effort by our guys."

Cedar Falls, which had trailed the whole game, got the ball back on the Hempstead 44 with 2:13 left and no timeouts.

Farley completed a pair of third-down passes to get keep the Tigers moving. But on third down on the Mustang 10, he was scrambling for the sideline with nobody open when he slipped and fell at the 10-yard line. That kept the clock running, and it dipped under 10 seconds by the time the Tigers snapped the ball on fourth down.

Hempstead blanketed all of Cedar Falls' receivers, forcing Farley to proceed with his desperate scramble.

"Great calls defensively by our defensive coordinator Chuck Haas," Ehlers said. "We have a ton of guys who don't come off the field, and they stepped up in that situation."

The game's ending was the story for the Tigers (2-2) all night.

Twice in the first half, Cedar Falls drove deep into Hempstead territory only to be stopped. Drew Gienau had a 44-yard field goal fall short, and the Tigers were stopped on a fourth-and-short at the Mustang 16. Both those drives came in the first quarter.

"Give Hempstead a lot of credit, they are a much improved ball team from last year," Tigers co-coach Pat Mitchell said. "We had our chances, but we had a lot of errors … fixable errors."

The game was tied at seven at the half, with both first half scores following turnovers.

T.J. Houselog scored on a two-yard run with 9:31 left in the second quarter after Jay Gonzales fell on a Farley fumble at the Cedar Falls 22-yard line.

The Tigers' James Harrington recovered a Dillon Hefel fumble at the Hempstead 35, which led to a Barkley Hill eight-yard touchdown with 5:45 left in the half.

Hempstead took the lead at the start of the third quarter.

The Mustangs forced the Tigers to punt on their initial possession, and Hempstead went on its only sustained drive of the game.

After being held to 48 first-half yards, the Mustangs drove 66 yards with their first possession as they converted three third downs and benefited from a personal foul against Cedar Falls.

Quarterback Ehlers plowed his way over from the 1 to make it 14-7 with 2 minutes, 37 seconds to go in the third.

"They capitalized on that fumble in the first half, converted two or three third downs on that touchdown drive to start the third quarter … we have to be better in those situations and force them to kick field goals," Tigers co-coach Brad Remmert said. "Those two drives were a big difference in this game."

"The 'kid' came up with a couple big plays on that drive," added Ehlers of his son, Matt.

Cedar Falls rebounded after the Hempstead score and drove inside the Mustang 15, but had to settle for a Gienau 30-yard field goal.

The Tigers were also forced to punt after driving inside the Hempstead 35 midway through the fourth quarter.

Cedar Falls stopped the Mustangs on their ensuing possession, but used up all three of their timeouts to conserve time on the clock.

"I haven't been in a great high school football game like that in awhile," Mark Ehlers said. "Cedar Falls is such a tradition-rich program, and for us to hold on and win … it's huge.

"I'm so proud of what our kids did … again, a real gutsy effort."

Cedar Falls outgained Hempstead, 291-113, but that was of little comfort to the Tigers.

"It is what it is. We've got to go back to the table and fix what we can," Mitchell said. "The important thing is we have to have people with open minds and a fixable approach."
