WAVERLY - As Eric Koehler huddled his football team together after Saturday's 41-5 clobbering of Simpson College, his message was straightforward.
"I don't want to hear one word about Central College," Wartburg's second-year head coach emphatically stated. "I don't want to hear their name, their mascot or anything about them."
The 18th-ranked Knights are one victory away from setting up a heavyweight showdown with the No. 6 Dutch in two weeks at Walston-Hoover Stadium for the Iowa Conference championship and an automatic berth into the Division III playoffs.
First, Wartburg (7-1, 6-0 IIAC) must tackle Cornell - which has lost 18 consecutive league games - next Saturday in Mount Vernon. Central (9-0, 7-0) is off next week.
"It's always easy to look ahead to big games, but our team is focused on what we want," tailback Neil Suckow said after a four-touchdown performance. "We understand our goal is to win next week, and we can't look ahead because Cornell will definitely beat us if we do."
After a dominating 27-3 triumph last week over Coe, Wartburg was just as impressive against Simpson. Sophomore quarterback Nick Yordi completed 26 of 30 passes for a career-high 308 yards and three touchdowns.
The defense held the Storm (3-5, 2-4) to 157 total yards and has yielded only one touchdown in the last 15 quarters of conference play.
"I really believe the past two weeks is the best eight quarters of football we've played since I've been the head coach, in terms of consistency and all phases of the game," Koehler said. "I hope we're getting hot at the right time."
The win was the Knights' 10th straight over the Storm and most lopsided since 1984. Wartburg failed to score on its first possession but tallied touchdowns on its next six. Yordi completed passes to eight receivers - the majority coming on bubble screens.
Cornerback and receiver Nick Weber had a career-best seven receptions for 68 yards, while Suckow hauled in eight catches for 85 yards and two scores.
"(Yordi) is running our offense at the line of scrimmage tremendously for a sophomore," Koehler said, "and his down-the-field throws were accurate, too. He played the best game he's played all season."
Weber said, "Yordi was amazing. This was just another statement game for him. He's a great quarterback, a great leader out there."
Wartburg, which generated 459 yards of offense, was able to establish the run, as well. Josh Van Rees spearheaded the charge with 71 yards on 11 carries, including a 29-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. The Knights finished with 145 rushing yards.
Defensively, after surrendering 69 yards on the second series to the Storm that resulted in a missed field goal, the Knights allowed only 88 over the final three periods. Simpson punted 10 times.
Wartburg's defense hasn't given up a touchdown since Loras registered one in the third quarter Oct. 13.
"They are playing so well," Koehler said. "Jim (Louis) and Joel (Dettwiler) have done such a great job with those guys. I'm happy for our kids because I know how important this is to them and how much time they've put into it."
Now, one challenge separates Wartburg from a chance to play for its first outright IIAC title since 2003.
"We're playing the best football we have played all year, and maybe in a couple of years around here," Weber said. "We're getting hot, and that's all you can ask.
"Right now, it's fun to go out there and put scores up like that."
