DES MOINES - Faith Burt is learning on the run about life as a Wartburg College athlete, but the Cedar Falls High graduate needs no refresher course when the subject is winning at the Drake Relays.
Burt, a freshman, helped the Knights win two college division titles at the 100th running of this event. Wartburg strode to victory Saturday morning in the sprint medley relay and did it again during a rainy afternoon session. The Knights were the victors in the 4 x 400.
For Burt, the collection of Drake Relays championship flags now stands at six. She won a quartet of them as a Tiger and added a pair Saturday.
"High school was fun," said Burt. "But when you actually get to compete at the college level at the Drake Relays and be a champion, it feels a whole lot better. It's an amazing experience."
Hannah Baker, who also competed on both first-place relays for Wartburg, saw things from a slightly different angle. She had never won at Drake during her high school days at Keota.
"This has always been a goal of mine," said Baker. "To get here in college … it's been a goal of ours to win, and we got the job done today."
Burt and Baker combined with Kelsey Steffens and anchor Nicole Calabrese for the gold in the sprint medley relay. For a dominant victory in the 4 x 400, North Butler graduate Chelsey Jacobs and Nevada Morrison joined Burt and Baker.
The Knights also finished third in the shuttle hurdle relay and the 4 x 100 relay. All in all, Wartburg had a big weekend at Drake's 100th running.
"I thought we had a very good shot at doing some amazing things," said Baker. "We've got some great leadership from the upperclassmen and we've got a lot of great freshmen and sophomores who really stepped up to the plate."
Wartburg's track program has been there before. The Knights won the 2008 NCAA Division III national title.
They see no reason to cool off during the outdoor season.
"We have a lot of lofty goals we want to accomplish," said Baker. "We want to win it outdoors, too. That's what we want to accomplish."
