Figuratively speaking, a few area boys golfers are halfway home after Friday's action at the various state tournaments.

Realistically speaking, there's a rough road ahead for one of them.

Still, Walnut Ridge's Jon Tink and Hampton-Dumont bolted to top of their respective leaderboards with strong performances in the first of two rounds.

Tink carded a 72 Friday to rise to the top of the 1A field on the picturesque layout at Spring Valley Golf Course in Livermore. Still, East Buchanan's Joe Zhiss entered today's second and final round just two strokes back, while just five strokes separate Tink from a group of four players tied for fourth place.

NU High finished the day in sixth place in 1A with a team total of 330. The Panthers finished three strokes behind four teams that are tied for the second spot. Thomas Creeden and Jalen Bergman led the Panthers, as both players settled into ninth place individually with rounds of 79.

Mason City Newman holds a commanding 13-stroke lead over the second-place pack in 1A.

In the Class 2A tournament at Lake Panorama National Resort in Panora, Hampton-Dumont blew away the competition in the first round with a team total of 315. Gilbert and Solon are tied for second after each carded totals of 338. Meanwhile, Hudson sits just three strokes back of them at 341 after getting an 80 from Michael McGarvey.

Hampton-Dumont finished the day with three players in the top 10. Jed Dirksen carded a 76 on the day, good enough for fourth place individually. Teammates Philip Coonley settled into sixth place at 78 and Dillion Drew was tied for 10th with an 80.

At the 3A tourney at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Decorah is in sixth place. Defending 3A individual champion Cody Schweinefus led the Vikings and sits fourth individually with a 76. Schweinefus is just two strokes behind leader Aaron Smith of Pella.
