CARBONDALE, Ill. - Northern Iowa became the first program in Missouri Valley Conference history to sweep all four conference track and field titles in the same season, capturing both the men's and women's outdoor titles Sunday at McAndrews Stadium.
The Panthers already had swept the MVC indoor championships.
UNI's men held off Wichita State by 19 1/2 points, while the Panther women jockeyed all day with Southern Illinois before pulling out the victory - 172 1/2 to 168.
The women's outdoor title was the program's first, and it snapped a four-year run by Wichita State.
"It was a highly competitive meet and we answered the call," Valley coach of the Year Chris Bucknam said. "We answered the call when the chips were down on the last day and you can't ask for more than that.
"The first two days were phenomenal for our men and women, and that laid the groundwork. We had some hiccups today, but we were able to recover and win."
Dani Stipe was named the Most Outstanding Women's Track Athlete, Ehi Oamen was named Most Outstanding Men's Field Athlete, and Raven Cepeda was named the Most Valuable Men's Athlete.
The women overcame favorite Rachel Jansen fouling out of the discus, but the Panthers got a surprising victory in the 800 from Amy Bagge, outlasting Michelle Brunck of Illinois State over the final 200 meters to claim victory.
"I knew I had a little left, and usually I hold it back, but I thought I'd try something new and it worked out well to get a little more fight into my races," Bagge said. "I never thought it was something I'd be able to accomplish, but it's certainly the best way to end my last conference meet."
That was the only victory by a Panther woman Sunday, but UNI scored a plethora of seconds, third, fourths and fifths.
"I couldn't be happier for this women's program," Bucknam said. "It's come an awfully long way in the last four years. Last year we were close and the kids made that effort to get over the hump. I can't be more thrilled for them."
The Panther men had a banner final day. winning five events. Cory Goos and Dennis Hammels were 1-2 in the 400 hurdles, Tyler Mulder captured the 800, Terrance Reid prevailed in the 400 and Dorian Ulrey won the 1,500. The Panthers' Jarrel Anderson and Cepada also finished 1-2 in the 110 hurdles.
In addition to Mulder's first in the 800, UNI had Ulrey finish third, Jack Ogden fourth and Mike Craddick fifth.
"It just proves we're a deep middle distance school and probably one of the best middle distance programs in the nation," said Mulder, the 2008 indoor national champion. "I don't think any other team has eight guys who went 1:52.00 or faster (in the 800), and we might have even had more in the finals if we didn't have two of our 800 guys sitting home injured."
In the 1,500, Ulrey topped two-time defending champion Girtz Azis of Wichita State 3:56.81 to 3:57.63.
"I just tried to run easy … no effort for the first three-quarters of the race," Ulrey said. "With about 400 to go, I saw Leydon (Tolhurst) from Drake and he was a little farther ahead than I thought he'd be, so I picked it up and it turned out well."
Reid's victory in the 400 was his second MVC outdoor title.
"We battled a lot of adversity this spring," Bucknam said. "We could have folded our tent, and the women didn't and the men didn't. These performances speak for themselves, in terms of the type of athletes we have and what UNI means to these kids."
The Panthers are off until May 30, when they will travel to Lincoln, Neb. for a NCAA regional meet. UNI has reached more than 20 regional qualifying marks.
