LINCOLN, Neb. - Needing a win at heavyweight to preserve a share of the Big 12 wrestling title, Iowa State got what it needed from top-ranked David Zabriskie.
With Zabriskie's 3-1 decision over No. 2 Mark Ellis of Missouri, the Cyclones earned a first-place tie with Nebraska at 70 points apiece. The championship was ISU's third straight conference title, and marked the first time in conference history that the team standings finished in a tie.
The Cyclones' other individual championship came at 133 pounds, where Nick Fanthorpe won his second conference crown with a 5-1 decision over Chris Notte of Oklahoma State.
Nebraska 197-pounder Craig Brester was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler.
Iowa State automatically qualified nine wrestlers for the NCAA championships, with at-large qualifiers to be announced Wednesday. The national tournament takes place March 19-21 in S. Louis.
"I can't say that we wrestled very well overall," Iowa State head coach Cael Sanderson said. "We will be sharper at the NCAA meet."
