CEDAR RAPIDS - Waterloo West doubles team Andy Richter and D.J. Grant advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class 2A boys' state tennis tournament Friday, but the Wahawk duo saw its season end after two consecutive defeats.

Richter and Grant knocked off a team from West Des Moines Dowling in the opening round 6-0, 6-4 before falling to third-seeded Eric Allebach and Ivan Liao of Kennedy, 6-2, 6-3, in the quarterfinals at the Veterans Memorial courts.

Then in consolation play, Richter and Grant were bounced out of the tournament 6-0, 6-2 by a team from Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln.

Meanwhile, West's other doubles team, Jordan Harbaugh-Williams and John Puk, lost both matches Friday.

The duo ran into the top seed in the opening round, stumbling to Bettendorf's David DeSimone and Kyle Johnson 6-0, 6-1. They followed with a loss in the consolation round.

Meanwhile, Des Moines Roosevelt's Charlie Caris, aiming for his third straight singles title in 2A, won a pair of matches by 6-0, 6-0 counts. He'll meet Fort Dodge's David Knight in a semifinal match at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Dubuque Senior's Nick Mozena upset second-seeded Joey White of Cedar Rapids Kennedy in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.
