Luther, Wartburg fall in Division III softball regionals

INDIANOLA - Luther and Wartburg College each were sent to the loser's bracket of the NCAA Division III Regional tournament on Friday.

Webster University prevailed over Wartburg, 1-0, while Gustavus Adolphus earned a 5-3 win over Luther.

Webster was held to just one hit and scored its lone run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning. Wartburg starter Angela Hartwig struck out 12 batters and walked just one in 5 2/3 innings. She was relieved by Lexy Determan who recorded the final out.

The Knights stranded seven runners on base as they were unable to capitalize on four hits and three Webster errors. Determan led Wartburg with two hits.

After Luther rallied to tie the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the second inning, Gustavus Adolphus took the lead for good with a three-run third inning.

Both Luther and Gustavus had four hits in the game. Kayla Denner led the Norse with two RBIs.

Luther pitcher Kim Lambert took the loss in relief of starter Kelsey Hake. Gustavus Adolphus' Erin Truebenba pitched a complete-game victory. She struck out two and walked six in seven innings of work.

Wartburg will return to action at noon on today against Washington-St. Louis University. Luther faces St. Thomas 2 p.m. at Simpson College in Indianola.
