Kettman upset with Don Bosco's effort

ROCHESTER, Minn. - Tom Kettman doesn't mind throwing his small fish into a big pond.

That's why for the second straight season Kettman brought his Class 1A top-ranked Don Bosco wrestling team to the Clash National High School Duals.

Don Bosco, with its 150 students, is the smallest of any competitior at the Clash, but that didn't bother Kettman last year when the Dons wrestled well but finished 2-4.

Friday night, with Don Bosco owning one of the top four seeds, Kettman expected to see a similar effort.

He didn't.

The Dons dropped a 36-28 decision to Hastings (Minn.) - one of the four teams to beat them last year in the semifinals, then looked lackluster in a 37-27 wrestleback defeat against High Point (N.J.)

"Very disappointed," Kettman said. "We had guys quit. We had guys quitting and getting pinned … just giving up."

The Dons entered with lofty expectations and were hoping, at the least, to reach the finals of Bracket C where they would've met a familar face, former Don state champion Daryl Weber and his Christiansburg squad from Virginia.

"We had some guys fight tooth and nail, but we didn't have enough guys wrestle up to their ability," Kettman said.

Hastings registered a pair of upsets at 152 pounds and 215, and got a wild victory from Tyler Rohr at 145.

Rohr and Don Bosco's Vance Ortner were in a topsy-turvy bout that needed overtime to settle.

The two traded reversals in the final 10 seconds of regulation, with Rohr's right before the buzzer to force overtime. There, Rohr scored the eventual takedown midway through to win, 15-13.

At 152, Don Bosco's defending 145-pound state champion Clay Welter, was leading 6-2 when he was caught and bearhugged by Nate Williams to his back and pinned in 5:17.

That was a nine-point swing in the Raiders favor.

Against High Point, the Dons were never in the match, losing the first five matches and falling behind 24-0.

Bart Reiter stemmed the tide briefly, with a pin at 135, but the Wildcats won the next two to all but seal the match.

Don Bosco beat Luxemborg-Casco of Wisconsin in the opening round, 55-15.

Christiansburg beat Hastings in the Bracket C finals, 30-28, to advance into today's championship bracket with Ballard of Huxley, Apple Valley (Minn.) and Simley (Minn.), which upset St. Edward of Lakewood, Ohio.

"I feel great our kids really stepped it up," Weber, who has helped led the Blue Demons to seven straight Virginia AA state titles. "Going into this, we wanted to win all our matches today, and on paper, we weren't supposed to, so everything tomorrow is sort of the gravy.

"I didn't come up here to get that match up (Don Bosco). They are a great team, and it would've been fun, but we just came up here to win as many matches as we could."

Waverly-Shell Rock head coach Rick Caldwell felt his team rode a rollercoaster for most of the opening day.

One second the Go-Hawks were up, the next they were down.

WSR went 2-1 on the day, but were just 22-20 in matches, including a forfeit win.

"It was an interesting day," Caldwell said. "I don't even know how to summarize it."

Eric DeVos at 112, Jordan Rinken at 119, Luke Pint at 130 and Cody Krumweide at 215 were a perfect 3-0 for the Go-Hawks.

The Go-Hawks dropped their first dual of the day, 31-30, to Glenbard North of Illinois.

Glenbard received a major decision and a pin in the last two matches to rally for the victory.

WSR toppled Ponderosa (Colo.), 42-36, before defeating Kenyon-Wanamingo (Minn.), 36-36, on criteria to finish 2-1.

It was that match, Caldwell said perfectly described his team's day.

"We win eight matches and tie," Caldwell said. "We got decked six times, and one of them we were ahead 16-4 and got pinned. That has kind of been our day.

"We just haven't performed as well as we'd like. Losing to Glenbard, I knew that was a real tough match. It was close. They matched up well with us and we didn't match up well with them."

A year after winning it all, the Go-Hawks can wrestle for as high as 17th today.

The Go-Hawks wrestled without 125-pound regular Cody Caldwell, who was a state placewinner last year 112.
