CEDAR FALLS - If only for a moment Saturday, the Senior All-Star Spotlight Meet was not about track and field events and the athletes who came from three states (Illinois, Wisconsin, South Dakota) to perform. It was a moment of human kindness and heartfelt applause from everyone attending as Jordie VanderHolt of Aplington-Parkersburg was introduced for the 100-meter hurdles.

As public address announcer Mike Jay acknowledged VanderHolt, he reminded all in attendance of the "pure living hell this young lady and all residents of Parkersburg and surrounding areas just went through."

The crowd, silent at first, erupted into a moment of applause directed at the Falcon runner.

"Oh my God, it just blew me away," VanderHolt said. "I was not expecting that intro at all. It just goes to show how great people are around here. I loved every minute of it."

VanderHolt finished seventh in the hurdles but walked away with a personal medal.

"My parents told me to go out and compete and get some normalcy back in my life," added VanderHolt. "So I trained on my own and here I am, and I love it."

As the clouds broke free and the temperature began to rise, the heat on the Mark Messersmith Complex track was just beginning to soar.

Brooke and Blaire Dinsdale of North Tama began the hot day as part of a record-breaking performance in the 4x800. Teamed with Kristi Schuette of Iowa City West and Jacqueline Kane of Marion, the foursome shattered the old record by five seconds with a time of 9:20.54.

"We were definitely excited when we found out it was a record," Brooke said. "We knew it was reachable, and we have trained for so long. We were ready."

Brooke had given Team Iowa a short lead, then sister Blaire kicked it in on the anchor and put distance between her and the rest of the field heading into the wind.

"Oh yeah, that wind was tough to run in, but we have trained for that," Blaire said. "It was fun having the girls that we have competed against on our team. Coach (Bill Calloway) wanted this group to run together, and it worked well."

Calloway, who also coaches Cedar Rapids Kennedy, refused to take credit.

"I knew this would be a pretty good team, it really wasn't a brain thing," a modest Calloway said. "These girls are very well-conditioned, and I believe overall this whole team is the best I have ever had here.

"It was a terrific day where no one is a loser." added Calloway.

The Dinsdales, who have signed letters of intent with Nebraska, added more medals to their collection with Brooke taking first in the 400-meter dash and Blaire capturing first in the 800-meter run. They combined once again in the 4x400 relay with Kane and Michaela Brungardt of Storm Lake to take a first-place medal home.

Cedar Falls' Faith Burt showed her future Wartburg coaches what they will be getting as she anchored the 4x200 that broke a meet record with a 1:42.58 time.

Burt had been battling with Team Illinois star Toni Graham all day, and when they were matched up on the anchor, Burt was not going to surrender her lead.

"When I took off, I knew she was going to be right there," Burt said. "She pushed me hard like I haven't been pushed in years. That is great because I had the mindset not to let her win."

Graham won the 100-meter dash earlier, crossing the tape ahead of Burt.

"When I got the lead I was going to keep it," Burt added. "Today we got to show people what Iowa is all about."
