Summers drives Panthers past SEMO

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - After an 11-5 win Sunday over Southeast Missouri State, the Northern Iowa baseball team is all squared up.

The Panthers evened their season record at 6-6 and also salvaged a series split after being swept by the Redhawks Saturday.

Jason Summers led the UNI attack with five runs batted in, going 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles. Catcher Jeff Taliaferro went 3-for-5, Deric Manrique hammered a solo home run, and Brett Douglas went 1-for-1 with an RBI and three runs scored.

The Panthers jumped on SEMO for three runs in the first inning as Manrique led off with his first homer of the season and Summers doubled in Douglas and Travis Bennett.

Carlos Pinedo (1-1) allowed one run in four innings to pick up the win.

The Redhawks (7-5) rallied for four runs off Colin Rea in the ninth, but Keith Worner came in for the final out to preserve the win.

UNI returns to action Thursday with a game against Miami (Ohio) in Winter Haven, Fla.
