LIVERMORE - Not even a relatively mortal second round could prevent Jon Tink's march toward the high school golf equivalent of immortality.

Tink joined an elite group Saturday, becoming just the third Iowa prep to capture three straight state titles after his 151 total gave the Waterloo Christian senior a two-stroke win in the Class 1A state meet at Spring Valley Golf Course.

The way that 151 came about, though, gave Tink a few anxious moments. After a superb first round of 70 gave him a four-stroke lead Friday, he battled his way to an 81 in windier conditions Saturday.

"I can't really blame the wind, I just didn't play good," said Tink, who shot a significantly higher second round in each of his three state wins.

After a triple bogey on No. 5 bit into his lead, Tink came around with back-to-back birdies on 12 and 13 to finish with a two-shot edge on second-place Jacob Urdahl of team champion Mason City Newman.

"I wasn't playing super, but it was more just frustration than it was nerves," Tink said.

After holing out on 18, the Wheaton College (Ill.) recruit finished with a characteristically low-key celebration.

"I just turned in my scorecard, the usual things," Tink said. "I think I might have hugged Urdahl, but that's about it."

After joining Sean McCarty of West Branch (1989-91) and Kevin Neill of Preston (1985-87) as Iowa's only three-time champions, Tink was able to pinpoint exactly how his game has progressed over three championship seasons.

"All-around I think I'm better and I know I'm smarter," Tink said. "For example, this weekend the greens at Spring Valley were pretty fast and hard, and they break a good amount, and I was pretty pleased I didn't have a single three-putt all weekend. I don't think too many people down there could say that."

Despite competing solo, Tink was even able to enjoy the reflected glow of the team championship, which Mason City Newman ran off with by 18 strokes over second-place Treynor.

"I'm pretty good friends with all the Newman team," Tink said. "They call me their honorary seventh man, so we have a pretty good time together."

Ryan Kiewiet of Grundy Center earned first-team all-state honors with his fifth-place score of 75-83 - 158, while the Spartans took third in the team race with a total of 673.

Earning his qualification individually, East Buchanan senior Jordan Conrad finished tied for seventh at 81-79 - 160.

The area's fourth individual in the top 10 was NU High sophomore Joe Weber, who shot 84-79 - 163 for a 10th-place finish and second-team all-state status.

"It was lot windier on the course today, so he put the driver away and hit 3-iron off most tee boxes," said Panther coach Lee Weber. "He played a little more conservatively off the tee and managed to make some putts, which he didn't yesterday."

Class 3A

RHODES - The wind blew Andrew Peter's way Saturday.

While breezy conditions at The Harvester Golf Club wreaked havoc on most of the scorecards at the Class 3A state golf championship, Decorah junior Peter blew the field away with a 71, the low round of the tournament, to take state medalist honors by one stroke over Independence senior Jake Thomas.

Peter scored 81-71 - 152 to once again make a runner-up of Thomas (73-80 - 153), who finished second in each of the past three Class 3A championships.

Thomas held a two-stroke lead over Washington's Braden Gaal after the first round, while Peter was buried in a tie for 13th.

Ballard of Huxley also came from behind in the team standings, rallying from five strokes back to take a one-stroke victory, 652-653, over Spencer. Decorah finished with a fifth-place 335-335 - 670 in the team race.

Class 2A

PANORA - Neil Malenke of Unity Christian made his fourth entry in the state top five a memorable one, capturing the individual title with a 76-77 - 153, while Carroll Kuemper ran away with the team title by 11 strokes.

Waterloo Columbus' Adam Squires scored a top-ten finish with a ninth-place 82-80 - 162, leading the Sailors to a seventh-place showing in the team standings.

Denver and Sumner-Fredericksburg placed ninth and 10th, respectively, at Lake Panorama National Resort.
