DES MOINES (AP) - Ankeny has overcome two early losses to battle its way into the Top Ten.

The Hawks (3-2), who reached the semifinals of the playoffs last year, joined The Associated Press Class 4A football poll at No. 10 on Monday. They've won three straight after starting the season with a 35-14 loss to top-ranked West Des Moines Valley and a 31-30 loss in two overtimes to No. 5 Ames.

Five other newcomers moved into the polls in voting by writers and broadcasters around the state. Le Mars and Dallas Center-Grimes joined in Class 3A, Sheldon made its debut in 2A and Montezuma and Paullina South O'Brien appeared in the 1A poll for the first time.

The No. 1 teams all stayed the same, with Harlan a unanimous choice in 3A for the second week in a row. The Cyclones stayed perfect by beating Jefferson JSPC 31-0 for their 31st straight victory.

Valley received 19 of 21 first-place votes after beating Newton 42-20. The Tigers travel to No. 8 Fort Dodge this week. Cedar Falls moved up a spot to No. 2 and received the other two first-place votes.

Also staying at No. 1 were Sigourney-Keota in 2A, Gladbrook-Reinbeck in 1A and West Bend-Mallard in Class A.

None was seriously challenged last week, with Sigourney-Keota posting the most decisive victory, 69-0 over Keosauqua Van Buren. The Savage Cobras have outscored their opponents 283-18 and haven't given up a point since the second week of the season.

Sioux City East dropped out of the 4A poll to make room for Ankeny. East, which had been ninth, lost to Sioux City Heelan 24-6.

In another major change, defending state champion Bettendorf fell from second to seventh in 4A after a 21-17 loss to Davenport Assumption, which climbed one spot to fourth.
