DECORAH -- There may be pressure on a doubles team from Waterloo Columbus.
On the other hand, the Sailors always deflate the opposition.
It happened again Friday at the Class 1A state tournament at Luther College. Sailors Michelle Schupbach and Lauren Freidman repeated as champions with an overpowering effort.
Following a 6-1, 6-2 sweep of Davenport Assumption's Adrianne Foley and Laura Green, Schupbach and Friedman brushed aside another squad in the title match. This time, Ashtyn Dixon and Tiana Bark of Camanche absorbed a 6-2, 6-0 thumping by the two Sailors.
"They probably played one of the best matches I've seen in 35 years of doing this," said Columbus head coach Dave Will. "They completely dominated all of their matches."
Said Friedman, "We definitely played well. We got to the net a lot and dominated there. That's one thing we aimed for this year. (The championship) is definitely a big achievement."
Schupbach and Friedman, both juniors, entered the 1A doubles tournament as the top seeds and the defending champions.
Friedman and Schupbach also wanted to extend Columbus' dominance. The Sailors had won 21 state doubles crowns entering the 2008 event. Now, the number stands at 22.
"Yeah, we had to prove we were good enough to stay on top," said Friedman. "Of course, from Columbus, there's always a target on you. So we felt a little more pressure. But this makes us feel good. We just worked hard for it. I think we did deserve it for all the hard work."
Schupbach is working with some very exclusive company. She's the seventh player in state history and the fifth from Columbus to win three doubles titles, joining former Sailors Blossom Bolton, Kim Hull, Molly Maine and Sally Sultentic as three-time champions.
In 2006, Michelle teamed with her older sister, Andrea, to capture a 1A title. Now, she's won back-to-back titles with Friedman.
"It was fun playing with my sister -- that was awesome," said Michelle Schupbach. "But after she graduated, I had to move on. It's neat -- Lauren and I are in the same class, so we'll get to play three years together."
Another doubles team from Columbus, Katie Garrett and Jessica Klieman, settled into eighth place in the 1A standings after dropping two consolation matches Friday.
In 1A singles competition, Decorah claimed fifth and sixth place. Logan Thompson of the Vikings defeated teammate Jenny Dallenbach in the consolation final.
