PELLA - NCAA Division III's No. 2-rated Central College ousted No. 7 Wartburg College from the Iowa Conference softball tournament Friday afternoon, 5-3.
In a loser's bracket battle of the conference's top two seeds, Wartburg scored all three of its runs in a first inning capped by Ashley Rogers' two-RBI single. Central (36-5) answered with runs in four of its six innings, including a two-run fourth inning when it took the lead for good.
Earlier in the day, Wartburg (36-6) defeated Simpson, 2-1, on a walkoff single from Tina Vande Hoef in the bottom of the eighth inning.
One day removed from upsetting Central, Luther College was defeated by Coe College 3-1. Jackie Miller, who went 3-for-3, drove in Luther's lone run in the top of the sixth inning. The Norse (32-8) will resume play at noon Saturday against Central. The winner will play Coe in a 2 p.m. finals contest.
