CEDAR FALLS - Rick Heller is staying in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Heller, who has spent the past 10 seasons as the head baseball coach at the University of Northern Iowa, will be the hitting coach at Creighton next season.

Reportedly, the two sides have agreed on a deal, but no official announcement has come from Creighton.

Heller sent a letter Monday afternoon to UNI baseball supporters thanking them for their help the past decade and made mention of his new job.

UNI's program was discontinued at season's end in February by the university for financial reasons. Heller's last day at UNI is Wednesday.

"We are cleaning out the office as we speak," Heller said Monday in the letter. "It's sad and seems so senseless. In some ways, it still hasn't really sunk in yet."

For the past few weeks, Heller and his staff have been working the phones to find jobs and places for their players to play next season.

Assistant coaches Scott Brickman, Marty Sutherland and Brian Grunzke are still searching for positions as their contracts expire June 30 at UNI.

"When we walk out the door on Wednesday, it will be for the last time, and it will be the final nail in the coffin," Heller said. "I will tip my hat."
