WEST UNION - Cedar Falls' Jill George had an eye on a spot in the Late Model feature at the Indee Open Series races Wednesday at Fayette County Speedway.
But her trip to the main event went upside down, rightside up and upside down again.
George was chasing Late Model legend Ed Sanger of Postville for the fourth and final qualifying spot when she went a little too hard into turn three, slid off turn four and rolled her car twice before it ended up on its hood.
"I went in a little too high and a little too hard," said George who was sore, but uninjured. "I was closing in on Ed (Sanger), and I just had a little too much front brake and the car went straight instead of turning. I wasn't trying to roll off turn four, obviously."
The crash caused considerable damage to her car, including caving in the roof, which temporarily trapped her inside.
"The emergency guys were quick to get there, but I was starting to panic a little bit. They were trying to assess the situation at the same time fuel was spilling all over the place," recalled George, the wife of Northern Iowa athletics director Rick Hartzell.
"I was eventually able to crawl out opposite the driver's side."
