ROCHESTER, Minn. - It was a measuring stick, at the least.
After two days of rugged competition at the Clash National High School Duals, Don Bosco of Gilbertville and Waverly-Shell Rock understand themselves better.
The Dons, the smallest school at the Clash, finished 14th, after a 2-1 Saturday.
The Go-Hawks were 18th, finishing 4-2 overall, after losing their final bout to rival Iowa City West, 36-25.
"It certainly exposes some of your lesser strengths," Go-Hawk head coach Rick Caldwell said. "Everybody comes up here to find out where they are at."
A year ago, Waverly-Shell Rock claimed the Clash championship, but after graduating 10 seniors, Caldwell knew it would be tough to replicate that performance.
The Go-Hawks lost their tournament opener to Glenbard North, 31-30, but rebounded to win their next four matches before falling to the Trojans, evening the season series between Class 3A's top-two teams at 1-1.
Waverly-Shell Rock beat the Iowa City West, 37-33, at the Five Seasons Duals in Cedar Rapids on Dec. 9.
"You hate to drive up to Rochester and the last dual you're wrestling is somebody from Iowa you are going to see three, four or five times a year," Caldwell said. "It was a decent dual. There were some good matches. I don't know how many actual matchups there were supposed to be, but we were both moving guys all over the place trying to find a way win, find a way to give our team a little bit of an advantage."
The Go-Hawks were without Cody Caldwell at 125, who could miss another month with a hamstring injury, and may have lost Luke Pint, who was injured when he fell hard to the mat while controlling Iowa City West's Garret Hathaway.
The injury appears to be in the collarbone area, but Caldwell said Pint told him it felt like the injury was beneath the collarbone.
"Hopefully it is not to bad," Caldwell said. "He is a senior and needs to finish out his career in the right way. And, we need him. We don't need anymore guys hurt.
"Everybody would like to be healthy at this point, but it is a reality that not very many wrestling teams are healthy at this time of the year."
Jordan Rinken, Eric DeVos and Cody Krumwiede all finished 6-0 at the tournament, while Jake Ballweg and Pint were each 5-1.
Keelan Moore, who had a rough first day, recorded three falls on Saturday.
After Friday's session, Bosco head coach Tom Kettman wanted to kick his team's backside all the way back to Gilbertville had it been physically possible.
But instead the Dons got an attitude readjustment back at the team hotel.
The message was heard loud and clear.
Don Bosco smoked Perham (Minn), 42-19, the same team which beat Iowa City West a day earlier, to open day two.
"They yelled at us, but not to bad," three-time state champion Bart Reiter said. "They wanted us to keep our heads up and come out and wrestle harder."
The Dons followed the Perham win with 28-22 victory over Glenbard North of Illinois, before falling to Oregon's top-ranked team, Roseburg, 42-24.
"I told them we stunk up the place," Kettman said. "Then I told them let's forget about, come out tomorrow and wrestle the Bosco way.
"We came out and wrestled much better today. This one (Roseburg dual) got away from us, some of the matchups weren't favorable for us, but I thought all and all we wrestled much better today."
The Dons had three wrestlers finish 6-0 for the tournament - Reiter at 135, Taylor Kettman at 171 and Jake Thome at 189.
Thome recorded his 100th career victory by pinning Roseburg's Brandon Romano with 2 minutes and 43 seconds.
"We talked about it (as teammates), but the people who needed to step it up took it upon themselves to mentally and physically be prepared," Thome said of criticism the team got from the coaching staff.
Reiter also had a signature win Saturday, defeating Glenbard's Jimmy Chase, 8-4. Chase is the defending Illinois AA 130-pound state champion and a sought after recruit.
"That was definitely my toughest match of the tournament," Reiter said. "Jimmy was my test and I felt like I went out there and wrestled good. I could have done better, obviously, but all and all I'm okay with my tournament."
Apple Valley of Minnesota won the tournament, destroying all three of its Saturday opponents - Simley (Minn), Ballard of Huxley and Christiansburg (Virg.)
