CARBONDALE, Ill. - Maybe this will be the game the University of Northern Iowa basketball team looks back on in March as the turning point in its season. Or, maybe it was just a nice moment.
Regardless, the Panthers went into the new year with a bang Wednesday night.
Led by a determined defensive effort, UNI recorded its first victory over Southern Illinois at SIU Arena in 11 years, 59-51.
"Coming in here and getting a win is something special," junior forward Adam Koch said. "We're pretty pumped to be one of those teams to do it."
In fact, it was just the eighth loss in the last 103 home outings for the Salukis and only the third against a Missouri Valley Conference foe since the 2001 season.
"This is a hard place to win, and the numbers speak for themselves," UNI head coach Ben Jacobson said. "We had to play a very good game. We were very determined."
UNI (7-6, 1-1 MVC), winless on the road this season prior to Wednesday and coming off a heartbreaking double-overtime loss at home to Indiana State on Sunday, received contributions from eight players.
The Panthers made 11 of their first 17 shots and raced out to a 29-19 lead. The bench, which had just 15 points in Sunday's tilt, accounted for 16 points, five rebounds and four assists in the opening 20 minutes.
More impressively, UNI's defense - sluggish and maligned versus Indiana State - held SIU (5-8, 0-2) to nine of 28 shooting (32 percent) in the first half.
"That was as good of 20 minutes as this team has played," Jacobson said. "We've had some good stretches this year, but the 20 minutes we played in the first half, it was as tough as we've been - at both ends.
"It felt like there was a determination. Offensively, guys rose up and drilled shots."
Kerwin Dunham, who finished with a season-high 11 points, buried two 3-pointers in the opening half to give UNI its biggest lead, 27-16.
"I just thought Kerwin's confidence level and his aggressive approach to tonight's game really paid off for our team," Jacobson said. "He was tuned in, and I liked his toughness."
UNI saw its nine-point halftime lead erased. SIU held UNI without a field goal for nearly six minutes as it used a 15-3 flurry to snare a 45-41 lead.
But, unlike other games this season, the Panthers didn't crumble.
After Justin Bocot's basket gave the Salukis a four-point lead, they didn't register another field goal for the next eight-plus minutes.
"That's a big step for this team," said Jacobson, whose club held SIU to 34.5 percent shooting for the game. "At times this year, those runs have carried on too long. Tonight, we were able to stand up and do something about it.
"That was an important step for this team, and we grew in that area a lot."
The Panthers tallied six straight points to take a 47-45 lead. After five made free throws by Koch pumped the margin to five, Dunham delivered the blow.
With less than two minutes left and the 35-second shot clock winding down, Dunham drained a 3-pointer from the right wing to deflate the Salukis and their 5,380 fans.
"They collapsed down on Jordan (Eglseder) and I knew the shot clock was winding down, so I had to be prepared to shoot the ball," Dunham said. "It felt good, and it went in."
In addition to Dunham, freshman Johnny Moran had 11 points. Koch finished with 10 points, while Eglseder had six points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
SIU freshman Kevin Dillard, Mr. Basketball last season in Illinois, led all scorers with 16 points. Carlton Fay finished with 12 for the Salukis, who are 0-2 in MVC play for the first time since the 1998-99 season.
"This was definitely special," Moran said, "because this program hasn't won here for a long time. It's a big win, but we can't let it be the highlight of our season.
"We've got to keep working hard and keep getting wins."
