St. Norbert stuns Wartburg late, wins in OT

DE PERE, Wis. - St. Norbert stopped Wartburg's Lamar Harvey short of the goalline in overtime to perserve a 42-35 come-from-behind victory over the Knights Saturday at Minahan Stadium.

The Green Knights (1-0) scored on the final play of regulation, a 8-yard pass from Rob Berger to Jeremy Gezella, and scored first in overtime on Berger's fourth touchdown pass of the game, a seven-yard strike to John Weninger.

Berger accounted for 443 yards of total offense for St. Norbert (317 passing, 126 rushing).

In addition to his four touchdown passes, Berger also scored on runs of six and 29.

The game was tied five times.

Wartburg (0-1) got 151 yards rushing from Harvey.

But on first and goal from the six in overtime, Harvey was 1, 2, 1 and no gain on the final play.

Nick Yordi passed for 200 yards and two touchdowns for Wartburg. Todd Sampson and Matt Gustafson had touchdown receptions.

Wartburg hosts Augsburg next Saturday at 7 p.m. in its home opener.

BISMARCK, N.D. - Upper Iowa couldn't sustain its first-half offensive momentum Saturday as the University of Mary rallied past the Peacocks with a 28-point second half.

Upper Iowa (1-1) led 24-20 at halftime on the strength of two interceptions, one of which the Peacocks coverted into a touchdown, two Ben Curran touchdown passes and Curran's 2-yard TD run.

However, Mary (1-1) cut into a 24-14 deficit on Henry Lau's second TD pass of the half with just 19 seconds on the clock. Jamal Lomax gave Mary the lead 4 minutes into the second half with a 40-yard run, and Lau extended it to 41-24 with two long TD passes.

Lau finished with 369 passing yards, Terry Newsome turned five catches into 128 yards and Lomax ran 29 times for 189 yards to lead the Mary offense. Upper Iowa's Curran passed for 324 yards while his twin brother, Nate, led the defense with a team-high 12 tackles, including eight solos.
