LIVERMORE - Jon Tink said Spring Valley Golf Course is not a layout that suits his eye.

The Livermore course is tree-lined and features fast greens.

"I kind of like courses that are a little more wide open," Tink said. "This course, you have to think so much on what you're going to do on every shot."

However, over the past two days, nobody maneuvered their way around the 18-hole venue better than the Walnut Ridge sophomore.

Tink registered a final-round 77 to hold off Hinton's Josh Solma by a stroke for medalist honors at the Class 1A state meet.

"It hasn't completely hit me yet," said Tink, who shot a two-day total of 149 to became Walnut Ridge's first state golf champion. "I just went out and played a golf tournament."

Tink said it was a contrast of two rounds. After a hot day with the putter in an opening-round 72, Tink struggled on the greens Saturday.

"During the round, I wasn't playing that great," he said. "I was kind of getting mad at myself. I just tried to hang on and put some good strokes together."

Not aware of what his competitors were doing, Tink parred the last three holes to secure the victory.

"It's just so exciting that this happened for me so early," said Tink, who tied for eighth as a freshman. "Now, I have a couple of years to continue to improve and get better."

Meanwhile, Decorah's Cody Schweinefus became just the 13th individual in boys' state golf history to earn medalist honors twice. A year after capturing the title on his home course, the senior followed up a first-round 76 with a 70 on Saturday at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington for the Class 3A championship by five strokes over Pella's Aaron Smith and Independence's Jake Thomas.

Schweinefus' second-round score was the best of the day by four shots.

As a team, the Vikings were sixth in the 11-team field.

In Class 2A, Hampton-Dumont, which built a 23-stroke lead after Friday's first round, cruised to a 30-shot win over Solon for the school's first state title at Lake Panorama National Resort in Panora. Senior and Arizona State recruit Jed Dirksen finished as the runner-up medalist with a two-day total of 150 (76-74). Teammate Philip Coonley was third after rounds of 78 and 74.

Hudson claimed third in the team race - one stroke ahead of Roland-Story. Brent Messmore was the Pirates' top finisher, placing 24th following a Saturday 83.

Also in Class 1A, East Buchanan was third - 21 shots behind champion Mason City Newman. East Buchanan junior Chris Reck tied for third in the medalist race.

NU High was sixth and Jesup took seventh in 1A. Ben Peterson was the top finisher for NU, taking ninth after a Saturday 78.
