MONMOUTH Ill. - As intimidating as they may appear on the surface, the Monmouth Fighting Scots aren't exactly a band of William Wallaces.
Fourteenth-ranked Monmouth began the year beating up on the likes of 1-9 Lawrence - squads that looked less than brave and severely lacked in the heart department.
Wartburg, on the other hand, was battle-tested.
And, in Saturday's Division III second-round playoff game, the Knights rebelled against the supposed nobility, overthrowing Monmouth, 30-28.
Despite some glossy statistics from its opponent, Wartburg clawed out a wild win when senior receiver Justin Vetter hauled in a jump-ball scoring strike with just seven seconds remaining.
"It's unbelievable, really," said Wartburg coach Rick Willis, whose squad stormed the field in a wild display of spontaneous jubilation afterward.
"We talk about playing 60 minutes," Willis added, "and there wasn't a better example of a team battling than that."
Seventh-seeded Wartburg (10-2) has now won two playoff games in one season for the first time in school history. The Knights next visit No. 1 Willamette (Ore.) (12-0) next Saturday in the national quarterfinals.
The win was especially sweet for Nashua native Vetter, who wrestled away the winning, 23-yard scoring toss in double coverage. Vetter had dropped a sure touchdown bomb near midfield just minutes earlier and had fumbled just 10 yards from paydirt before that.
"I really still can't believe it," said Vetter, who has a school single-season record 77 receptions this season.
"I just had to push those (earlier mistakes) out of my mind. I knew I had to just jump as high as I could and go get (the final pass). That's what I did.
"It was a roller-coaster ride."
Monmouth (11-1) lost despite registering 27 first downs and getting 313 passing yards on 41 completions from star quarterback Alex Tanney. The 10 penalties the Scots committed didn't help.
The biggest Scots mistake occurred on their last offensive series when they committed a false start while going for it on a fourth-and-six from the 16-yard line. Monmouth coach Steve Bell then opted to go for it again instead of attempting a roughly 38-yard field goal. Tanney then saw his final pass broken up by Wartburg defensive back Josh Faaborg.
"I'll take it (the blame) on me," Monmouth's Bell said of not kicking a field goal. "But I'm not gonna beat myself up about it."
The turnover on downs gave Wartburg the ball 79 yards from paydirt with just 94 seconds to go while trailing, 28-24.
No problem. Knights signal-caller Nick Yordi simply sprang into action and surgically picked apart the Scots' secondary.
"We do the two-minute (drill) once or twice a week to prepare," said Yordi, who became Wartburg's single-season passing leader thanks in part to 276 yards Saturday. "We did a great job of just being composed all the way down the field."
Monmouth's no-huddle, spread offense ate up yardage in chunks early Saturday, handing the hosts a 28-14 halftime advantage.
But Wartburg's defense - led by the likes of Jason Lansing (15 tackles) and Jake Braun (two tackles for loss) - applied just enough pressure to Tanney in the second half.
"You've just gotta fly off the ball, harrass their offensive line, and get to the quarterback," said Braun.
While the Scots succumbed to their foe in the clutch, Wartburg never wilted under pressure.
As a result, the Knights have advanced to uncharted postseason territory.
"Our guys talked about (how) this is their chance to leave a mark on Wartburg football," Willis explained.
"It's just gonna keep getting bigger and tougher. We understand that."
