LIVERMORE -- Despite difficult weather conditions that haunted the Class 1A boys' state golf meet at Spring Valley Golf Course Friday, Jon Tink of Walnut Ridge posted a round of 77 for a one-stroke ahead over East Buchanan's Chris Reck.

"The weather has definitely been a big obstacle out here today with the cold and high winds," Tink said. "I wasn't playing my best at the start, and I should have made some birdies on 12 through 14."

The Buccaneers hold a 10-shot lead over Newell-Fonda after day one in the team standings, with Jordan Conrad (81) of East Buchanan sitting in third behind Reck.

"I think all the boys will sleep well tonight," Walnut Ridge coach Todd Kuntz said. "It was the toughest playing conditions I have ever seen.

This is really a great course out here, but we are expecting the same conditions tomorrow, maybe just a little warmer.

"I think Jon had a tough start today, but he got his feet under him and we just wanted him to make par and be the last man standing. He will do well."

Tink will begin play today trying to fight off Reck for the individual state championship.

"I am just gonna go out there and play my best game," Tink added. "We anticipate the same weather for tomorrow, and we will just see what happens. I will keep an eye on Chris Reck and know where he is at, also."

NU High is three strokes behind Newell-Fonda, with Ben Peterson leading the Panther attack with an 82 that was good for a fourth place.

"This was definitely very difficult to play in as there were a lot of kids in layers of clothes and hats," Panther coach Lee Weber said. "It made driving very difficult with the cold and wind, and it made the greens very fast. It was a battle for survival out there today and will set up for a battle tomorrow, as well."

Other Panthers on the board were Jalen Bergman (84), Thomas Creeden (89) and Emmitt Fritz with a 92.
