CEDAR FALLS - It was a singular achievement in doubles.

Scott Gens of Vernon Center, Minn., was the top doubles shooter at the Iowa State Trapshoot Friday, battling gusting winds to record the only perfect 100 in the Iowa Doubles Championship.

Two Iowa shooters, Steve Crow of Brooklyn and Shelly Heitner of Fort Dodge, came within a bird of perfection at 99. Crow out-shot Heitner in a one-round shoot-off to claim his second in-state doubles title.

But the day belonged to Gens, whose advice for fellow doubles shooters is as easy to understand as it is difficult to follow.

"You've really got to want to win, and it takes a lot of effort," Gens said. "You've got to do everything right every time, not just most of the time."

Gens has been right every time so far in the state shoot. He has yet to drop a bird in any of the tournament's doubles events, running his streak to 300 straight.

The weather at this year's shoot has been all but perfect, but a fickle tailwind Friday kept scores down.

"It wasn't real windy, but just enough to make them kind of bounce around a little bit," Heitner said. "I just tried to hold the gun tight and be a little more aggressive."

Crow, who also scored 99 for his first in-state doubles title in 2001, dropped his only target of the day at No. 82, on the second bird.

"You always keep an eye on what you miss," Crow said. "The first bird is supposed to be a target you never miss, because it's a gimme - you know where it's coming from. It's the second one that might be trouble."

Phil Thyer on Independence broke 98 of 100 doubles targets, then won the runner-up trophy in a shoot-off.

Waterloo's Craig Hughes and Mason Moore each broke 97 doubles targets, Jeff Ira of Spillville broke 98, and Leo Kremer of Jesup won the Class C trophy with a 92.

Friday's Winchester AA Handicap shoot saw Janesville's Kenny Rogers score the senior veteran title with a 98.
